Xiaomi Redmi word four for Rs 499? don't buy, it really is a faux web page

Latest Govt. Jobs 20:49:00 News Edit
Fake offer

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is easily one of the best budget smartphones you can buy in India. In fact, the device is so popular that it usually sells out within minutes of a flash sale going live.
Now, a website called mi-offers.com is selling the Redmi Note 4 for a mouth-watering price of Rs 499. That too, the top end variant with 64GB of internal storage and 4GB of RAM that ordinarily retails for Rs 12,999.
Too good to be true? Well, yes. The website is a fake phishing site created just to extract a user's information. Phishing is the attempt to obtain sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, personal information and credit card details (and, indirectly, money), often for malicious reasons.
These kind of websites and apps keep popping up left right and centre and are made in order to extract information from unsuspecting individuals. Usually they resemble a company's official website to a tee because of which they are difficult to spot at first glance.
This particular website attempts to look like the Amazon India product listing for the Redmi Note 4. What is rather interesting is the fact that the Redmi Note 4 is a Flipkart exclusive that is not even available on Amazon India.
The attention to detail is surprising - there is an Amazon fulfilled tag, a graphic showing a 4.5 star user rating with 7,402 reviews, a proper product description and a big buy now link reminiscent of Amazon's original.

What happens when you click Buy Now?

Upon clicking 'Buy Now', the site redirects you to another page masquerading itself as the order confirmation screen on Amazon India. Upon clicking 'Buy Now' again, a pop up comes up on the screen which says that you have to share the offer to 10 different people/groups on Whatsapp before you will be allowed to buy the device.
Brave people that we are, we actually sent the offer to 10 contacts on WhatsApp. After doing so, the website redirected us to another page containing a link for 'Download and install UC News' and another link for 'Download and Install Mi Store', both of which offered apk files of UC News and Mi Store respectively which are probably fake and may contain viruses.

Be wary of such scams and educate people you know about the same. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
On a rather funny note, upon clicking the link 'Terms Of Service' at the bottom of the website, a new page pops up with the heading "Site created for educational purposes". Underneath that there are 8 terms and conditions, one of which actually says - "You have your own permission to share or believe this site".

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 specifications

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 comes with the Snapdragon 625 SoC, the Adreno 506 GPU, a 5.5' 2.5D fullHD display and a 4,100mAh battery.
The smartphone is available in three different versions in India - a low-end variant with 2GB of RAM and 32GB storage for Rs 9,999, a mid-tier model with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage for Rs 10,999 and the top model with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage for Rs 12,999.
On the imaging front, the smartphone comes with a 13MP rear camera with phase detection auto focus and an aperture of f/2.0. The rear camera lens has a 25% larger pixel area as compared to the Redmi Note 3 and is sourced from Samsung and Sony. On the front, there is a 5MP camera with a 85 degree wide-angle lens.
