Infocus Vision 3 review

What happens when you hear about a smartphone that is priced below Rs 7,000 but comes with two trends that are currently very popular among phones? Your curiosity is certainly piqued, right? That's exactly what we thought when we heard that Infocus' Vision 3 sports a bezel-less display and has dual rear cameras. In fact, it also has a feature which lets you click pictures from front and back cameras simultaneously. At Rs 6,999, the smartphone surely does sound good on paper. But what is it like to really use it? Read the rest of the review to find out: Design

At the given price, we weren't exactly surprised to see that InFocus Vision 3 is made of plastic. Although we have maintained that we have a preference for phones that have a metallic built, we liked Vision 3's design for the given price range. The smartphone has a sturdy built and is easy to grip thanks to the rounded edges and corners.

The black coloured smartphone's front panel is dominated by the 5.7-inch HD+ IPS display which comes with 18:9 aspect ratio. Besides this, there is the selfie camera, earpiece and on-screen navigation keys. Flip over and you'll see the dual primary cameras along with the LED flash, the fingerprint sensor and InFocus branding below it.

The right edge of the smartphone has the power button and the SIM tray on it, and volume rocker buttons are sandwiched on the left. We personally are too used to having the volume rocker and power buttons together and always reached out to the SIM tray to adjust the volume on the device. It took some time to get used to it, but it is nowhere a downside. The 3.5mm jack is on the top edge while the charging slot is on the bottom.

The display of the smartphone produced good colours and had decent viewing angles. The colours although good, did seem a little saturated, but images produced and the app icons were sharp. The touch response of InFocus Vision 3 was good. Even while using the smartphone directly under the sunlight, there weren't any issues as they often crop up in phones priced in this bracket.
Performance
Infocus Vision 3 is powered by a 1.3Ghz quad-core Mediatek M6373 Cortex-A53 processor coupled with 2GB RAM. The device has 16GB internal storage of which 9.06GB is available for the user. There is also external card support of up to 64GB. The Vision 3 runs Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box with company's Smile UX skin on top. It is backed by a 4000mAh battery that is claimed to deliver 12 hours of video playback and 20 hours of 3G calling.

The smartphone comes with a 1 key split screen feature, which allows users to open more than one app at a time. The Vision 3 smartphone comes equipped with a 120-degree wide angle dual-rear camera setup of 13MP and 5MP sensors along with LED flash. One of these has a monochrome sensor while the other has a RGB sensor. On the front, there is an 8MP camera. It offers advance features including background blur.

The camera of the smartphone boasts of a 'Dualfie' feature that lets users to capture images from both front and rear camera simultaneously.

Infocus Vision 3 runs Android 7.0 Nougat skinned with Smile UX, which adds a number of tweaks to the software of the phone. The smartphone has a different looking notification panel and app icons. Recently used apps appear like they do in iOS devices and not the way they do in Android phones. The smartphone even reminds you at night that it's late you must go to sleep and has its own set of pre-installed apps including Amazon and UC Browser.

Coming to its performance, Infocus Vision 3 works perfectly well for routine tasks. Whether you browse multiple tabs on Chrome, use social media apps or use it to listening to music, the InFocus Vision 3 takes it all in its stride. There could be minor lags seen here and there while using heavy apps - especially games. Such apps like Asphalt 8: Airborne took longer than usual to launch and even switching between such apps was a bit more time consuming.

Now that we have mentioned Asphalt 8: Airborne, we'll talk about the gaming experience on the smartphone. Simply put, this isn't a smartphone for gaming. Infocus Vision 3 began heating up after just 15 minutes of gaming. And this problem wasn't limited to heavy games like Asphalt 8: Airborne. Even with Angry Birds 2 and Temple Run, we encountered the same issue. Heating up of the device wasn't restricted to just gaming as while using Google Maps for navigation, we did face a similar problem.

While gaming might not be the strongest suit of the Vision 3, when it came to multimedia content, it did impress us. Watching YouTube videos was impressive as the images were sharp and clear with adequate sound output. We recommend plugging in your headphones to boost the audio experience. Once it gets better, watching videos on the device is even effective.

The highlight of the smartphone is supposedly the camera and before we get into it let's just list out what it packs. The primary rear camera is 13MP and the secondary rear camera is 5MP. There is also an 8MP front facing snapper. The camera app comes with modes like HDR, PRO, Beauty and more. You can even make Time-Lapse videos and get pictures with Bokeh Mode on the camera.

While focusing on the objects, the camera takes a little longer than expected and the colours lacked accuracy as well. They seemed one shade more saturated than what they were in real. The images taken in day light turned out to be much better than the ones in dimly-lit areas. Clicking moving objects was certainly an uphill task.

Coming to battery life of the smartphone, it lasted us an entire day even with heavy usage involving social media, browsing internet, listening to music, watching videos and more.

Verdict

At this price, Infocus has really tried putting in a lot of features together in Vision 3. Overall, it left us with a bag of mixed feelings. While we liked the design and the display, we thought the performance of the smartphone could be better. The heating up of the smartphone during gaming and navigation was a problem and it's something we don't find acceptable no matter what the price range of the device is. The camera experience was satisfactory but the colours were saturated. The battery life of the phone is clearly one of its better features as it really lasted an entire day even with heavy usage. Buy it if you want such a wide array of features at such a low price. A word of caution though: Don't expect the phone to excel in all these aspects.
