Google Translate now proficient in 9 major Indian languages

Google has just announced a new set of products and features aimed at serving the needs of the multitudes of Indians who are coming online.
Today onwards, Google Translate will use Google's Neural Machine Translation technology in order to improve translations between English and nine major Indian languages - Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi and Bengali.
Till now, Google Translate used the old phrase based system to translate, which translated pieces of a sentence (individual words) at a time. The Neural Machine Translation technology actually translates full sentences at a time - thereby massively improving the quality of translation. In fact, Google claims that this change improves the quality of translation in a single jump than seen in the last ten years combined.
This Neural Machine Translation will also be available in Google Chrome's built in Auto-Translate functionality, making full page translations much more accurate than before. It will also be available to users on Google Search and Google Maps, both on desktop and mobile. This will allow for easy translation of local reviews on Google Maps.
Google has also rolled out a new update to Gboard which adds translation support for Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Urdu, and Gujarati. With this, Gboard now has translation support for all 22 scheduled Indian languages.
The update also brings with a new text editing tool that makes it easier to select, copy and paste and comes with new options for resizing and re-positioning the keyboard so it fits into the hand easily. The update also allows users to choose Hinglish as a language option.
Like the Google Indic Keyboard, Gboard now offers auto-correction and prediction in the new languages, plus two layouts for each - one in the native language script and one with the QWERTY layout for transliteration, which lets users spell words phonetically using the QWERTY alphabet and get text output in their native language script.
Google will now offer Hindi dictionary results from Rajpal & Sons dictionary in collaboration with the Oxford University Press. This new experience will also support transliteration, allowing users to use their existing keyboard to find meanings in Hindi. For ex: If someone wants to know the meaning of the word "Sandarbh", they can just type in "Sandarbh ka matlab" in Search, and they will instantly get to see word meanings and dictionary definitions on the search results page, including English translations.
