With tech in tow, Aptech dreams of an African safari

With tech in tow, Aptech dreams of an African safariAptech, one of India's oldest computer training institutes, is looking to strengthen its presence in Africa, even as it focuses on newer areas such as skill training in India and abroad.

The company has 51 centres in 15 countries, many of which are in Africa, the company's international business head Pravir Arora told ET.

“The African retail business currently contributes 19% of the overall international retail business and is growing at the rate of 34% as compared to last year. Nigeria is among our largest territories with 15 centres," Arora said.

He said demand has been spurred in part by the local government's thrust on skill building and training programmes, many of which tend to be financed by the state.

In Africa, the company primarily offers IT training, along with some courses in English speaking, animation, aviation and hospitality.

Next on the agenda is expanding its English speaking courses to French speaking countries in Africa such as Burundi, Ivory Coast, Senegal and Cameroon, where the increase in the number of tourists has resulted in increased demand for English speaking guides.

The company is likely to launch salon training programme, among others, this year. “We are currently customising the curriculum for the local market as the needs are different as compared to India and will launch that soon," Arora said. “Currently , Africa is the second largest market for us internationally after Vietnam, but it will soon be number one."
