NEW DELHI: Cybercrime is on an increase and hackers coming up with new ways to steal your personal and business information. Now security firm, Barracuda Networks has revealed that PDF files are becoming a part of targeted cyberattack that will compromise your system.

The firm reveals that within the span of three months they scanned and discovered that 41 million PDF files were part of an attack. These files consists of malicious websites with active scripts.

In an official statement, Barracuda Networks said, “Organizations often become aware of vicious cyberattacks after the damage has already been done.”


The firm also said that PDF files are suspected of malicious activities as they are easy to construct and transmit. Consumers and business users must remain extremely cautious at the time of opening PDF attachment in an email or on a website. Along with this, the companies should also conduct proper cyber training for its employees.

The security firm also added that most efficient and sophisticated attacks are carried over by embedded scripts such as JavaScript. The research found out that 75% of these scripts are malicious. Barracuda Networks scanned 70 million office documents in three months and found out that 4.7 million files were malicious.


On the other hand, the security firm also suggested that compressed files are another way in which criminals can transmit hidden attacks. The company detected a similar kind of case in September 2017. It was a huge ransomware campaign in which more than 27 million emails reached customers in less than a day.
