NEW DELHI: Amazon, in October last year, became one of the first companies to make a big splash in the Indian smart speaker segment by bringing its Echo devices. While the speakers were made available online until now, they can now be purchased offline. Previously, the speakers were available online only by invitations.
The e-commerce giant says that the voice-controlled speakers, Echo Dot, Echo and Echo Plus, will be available at over 350 retail outlets including some big ones such as Croma, Reliance, Vijay Sales and Crosswords among others, in 20 cities across India. The prices of the speakers remain the same.
“We are grateful to the customers across India who have helped create the Alexa experience during the invite phase,” said Jayshree Gururaj, director - AmazonDevices. “We are excited to make Alexa and our Echo devices available for all customers, and we can’t wait to hear about their experiences. Since Alexa runs in the cloud, she is always getting smarter – the Alexa experience in India continues to evolve with new features, even better speech recognition, new localised skills, expanded music selection, and more.”
The Amazon Echo, Echo Dot and the Echo Plus are priced at Rs 9,999, Rs 4,499 and Rs 14,999 respectively.
Amazon Echo (2nd gen.) is available in Charcoal, Heather Grey and Sandstone fabrics. It is powered by Alexa digital assistant, which performs activities such as checking weather, setting reminders, sports scores, shopping lists and more. It can even play music using streaming services such as Amazon Prime Music, Saavn and others. The digital assistant even controls the lights and switches when connected. It has a 7 microphone array along with buttons on top to control the volume and microphone. On the inside, there is a 2.5-inch woofer and a 16mm tweeter.
The Amazon Echo Dot is a puck-shaped device that is powered by Alexa and can be controlled using voice commands. Available in Black and White colours, the Echo Dot connects to speakers using Bluetooth or via 3.5mm cable.
As for the Amazon Echo Plus, the device looks exactly like the 1st gen Amazon Echo with a cylindrical shape. However, it is a smart hub instead of a Bluetooth speaker.
