Google offers $880mn funding for bendy OLED panels in upcoming pixel telephones

Google has reportedly proposed $880 million investment in LG's display division to boost the production of flexible OLED panels, which will be supposedly used on next generation pixel phones. The investment may further increase to ensure a seamless supply of OLED panels to pixel phones. However, LG is still reviewing the proposal before finalizing the deal. If both companies come to an agreement, Google will join the list of companies using OLED panels on the smartphones.

It is also worth noting that Apple Inc. made a $70 million deal with Samsung to supply bendable OLED panels for upcoming iPhones, which reinforces the fact that design and display are seeing unprecedented attention in 2017.

Google used 2.5D AMOLED panels provided by Samsung on the first generation pixel phones. To compete with the likes of Galaxy S8 or rumored iPhone 8, Google is opting for flexible displays to engineer an out-of-the-box product.

Google has just sold approximately 2.8 million pixel phones since its launch in October 2016. Google may go on all out specification blitz on the next generation pixel phones, as the sales of the original pixel phones are uninspiring. Though the camera and software are
outstanding, the unsophisticated design without waterproofing or wireless charging played the spoiled sport.

To outplay its competitors, Google should not compromise in any department, especially considering the universal applause Samsung Galaxy S8 series has been receiving. The next generation pixel phones will be released in two sizes. A Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 may power both the models. It may run on unannounced Android 8.0.
