Will Moto G5 Plus redefine the camera on a mid-ranger?

Until the advent of Moto G4 Plus, the camera was never a strong point on Moto G series. The G4 Plus camera has a 16MP Omnivision sensor with f/2.0 aperture. The camera is assisted by Laser and PDAF autofocusing systems. The result is an astonishing camera that takes great pictures with ample details and accurate saturation levels. In a nutshell, it redefined the camera on a mid-ranger and raised the bar high. It still holds the place as the best smartphone camera under $300.

Now, the successor of G4 Plus called G5 Plus has just launched at MWC 2017. The G5 Plus should sport an excellent camera to carry the legacy of its predecessor. To accomplish the feat, it should have a superior hardware coupled with good image processing. The camera hardware on Moto G5 Plus includes a Sony IMX260 sensor with a large f/1.7 aperture and dual-pixel autofocus. The large aperture size draws more light on to the sensor thus producing images with great details. Also, the dual-pixel auto focus is the feastest focusing systems present in the market. On the front it has a standard 5MP camera.

If you feel quite nostalgic after reading the hardware specifications of the rear camera, you have every reason to feel, as it is the same hardware used on the flagship Samsung Galaxy S7. It is bizarre to see the hardware on $750 flagship on a $250 mid-ranger. However, in the smartphone industry, nothing is eternal with specifications upgrading at a rapid pace. Overall, Moto G5 Plus has all the ingredients to pull off an excellent camera on a sub $300 phone. With minor tweaks to the software processing, it may further enrich the photography experience on the phone. It may be an another feather in Motorola's cap.
