Microsoft has launched a new lighter version of the Skype app that will work on poor Internet connections and low-end Android smartphones.Called Skype Lite, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said this version was designed specifically for India market and will feature an built-in integration with Aadhaar.
The regular Skype app will also feature Aadhaar integration by June 2017, that will enable Skype users to verify the identity of unknown callers in a variety of situations where identification verification is required, including job interviews, goods and property sale.
"Your next Skype Job interview might need Aadhaar verification. You can soon enter your Aadhaar number over Skype to verify yourself for an interview. The service can be extended for government services as well," said Nadella during his keynote address at Microsoft's Future Decoded event
"The Aadhaar data will be deleted automatically from the device once the Aadhaar Verified Skype chat is over" he added.
Besides this, Skype Lite will also feature India-focused third party chatbots. Microsoft said the app is optimized for 2G and flaky network connections and will consume less battery power. It also compresses photos and videos shared by users and features a reduced data usage mode for video calls.
The app was developed by Microsoft's development centre in Hyderabad and will support seven Indian languages including Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. Skype Lite will initially be available only on Android with plans to launch an iOS and Windows version in the future.
