Available in three series, with the top flat TV models and based on flat and curved screen, the new Samsung LCD Quantum Dots offers a range of up to 108% of the DCI range, with extended viewing angle and brightness up to 2000 cd/m2, by adopting a backlight LED Edge Local Dimming, 100Hz panels with anti-glare treatment, enclosed terminals in an external box and third-generation Tizen platform.
After the presentation at CES TV Q9 / Q8, Samsung has revealed more details of QLED range, including the Q7 models, the only available with both curved and flat panels. As already disclosed in Las Vegas, it is a evolution of LCD technology with Quantum Dots for widening the display range. Pending the self-emissive displays that Samsung is developing together with Nanosys, it adopted a blue LED backlight combined with new green/red nanocrystals, based on an alloy of aluminum and further miniaturized. The result is the complete coverage of the DCI-P3 range, rising to 108% in Q9 models.
Starting from the top, the range includes two plates models from 65/88 inches (QE65Q9F / QE88Q9F), while Q8 a curved screen available in sizes of 55 “/ 65” / 75 “(QE55Q8C, QE65Q8C, QE75Q8C). The series Q7 is divided into 4-inch flat panel TVs 49/55/65/75 (QE49Q7F, QE55Q7F, QE65Q7F, QE75Q7F) and three curved patterns (QE49Q7C, QE55Q7C, QE65Q7C). The brightness comes to 1500 nits in Q7 / Q8 series, going up to 2000 cd / m2 in Q9 models (indicated by Q HDR 1500 acronyms and Q HDR 2000).
The processing of movements is entrusted to the Motion Compensation Supreme technology, the effectiveness of which in the different models is indicated with the acronym PQI (Picture Quality Index) followed by a variable amount. The panels are of 100 Hz and benefit from the Moth Eye Filter for the reduction of environmental reflections, inherited from TV SUHD last year (Black Technology). The Korean manufacturer promises an increased contrast ratio of 200%, while adopting in all models a backlight LED Edge Local Dimming.
An advantage of the proven QLED is the largest viewing angle, now comparable with LCD IPS despite Samsung has remained true to type VA. The credit is mainly due to the pixel dual system, in which each point on the screen is divided into two portions driven independently.
The other parameter that Samsung would like to emphasize particularly is the color volume, larger OLED competition, thanks to higher range and brightness. The term refers to the correct representation of the color space in HDR using a three-dimensional solid instead of the usual 2D graphics, in which the white point is set at a reference value. The Korean manufacturer has also established an agreement with SpectraCal to support the CalMAN calibration software, which will allow you to adjust the parameters directly from the PC. In the program were introduced with the appropriate procedures for measuring color at different levels of luminance, as specified CIELAB VCRC (Volume-Colour-Reproduction Capability).
However, the choice of the backlight system is likely to limit the actual availability of the entire color volume to particular conditions (very bright images and low contrast). The Edge LED panels have in fact a number of control areas not sufficient to accurately adjust the emission in small areas of the screen. In the presence of content that exceed the native contrast ratio of the panel, frequent condition in HDR, the TV can increase the intensity of the backlight, but also by raising the black level, or keep it constant at the expense of the peak brightness.
Support to high dynamic range is limited to the format “open” HDR-10, where Samsung could still implement dynamic metadata like the Dolby Vision. The Tizen platform is used to interface updated Smart View, which lets you use your phone to launch applications, be notified of the beginning of programs and display a preview divided into categories (Sports, Music, etc. ). The Quick Connect mode enables the sharing of content from smartphone / tablet, while the Multi-Link Screen allows you to view up to four sources simultaneously.
All terminals, includes 4 HDMI 2.0a inputs compatible MHL and three USB ports integrated into the outer Connect box connected to your TV via a single fiber optic cable. For installation are available a bracket that allows the TV to adhere perfectly to the wall, the supports Studio Stand and Gravity Stand.
