Nubia N1 review: Better alternatives available
A lot of budget smartphones were launched in India this year. Almost all manufacturers, whether big or small, launched handsets catering to the fiercely-competitive budget segment. And one of them is the relatively new Nubia.
Nubia recently launched its N1 smartphone in the country, which is the company's third handset to launch in India. Having an affordable price tag of Rs 11,999, is the Nubia N11 any better than numerous other competing smartphones within the same price bracket?
We spent some time testing the Nubia N1, and here's what we think about this new budget smartphone.
Design
Honestly, the Nubia N1's design is not any different from other budget smartphones. We really liked how good the earlier-launched Nubia Z11 Mini is, but the N1 is as generic as any other Chinese smartphone available in the market.
The back panel has a metallic construction and has a fingerprint sensor in the middle. The rear camera has a quirky red lining that doesn't really gel well with the overall golden colour tone. There aren't any physical keys on the front, just capacitive keys below the display. The Home key looks great; it is a Red coloured circle that lights up every time you use the phone. Volume rocker and Power button are placed on the right, while the SIM card slot is on the left. The 3.5mm audio jack is up top while the USB Type-C port is at the bottom, between speaker grilles.
Although there are two colour variants of N1 - Gold and Silver, only the former is available is available in India.
Performance and camera
Nubia N1 is powered by an octa-core MediaTek Helio P10 SoC paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB/64GB of internal storage. The phone also accepts microSD cards of up to 128GB in size. It has 5.5-inch Full HD display of 1080x1920 pixel resolution and runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow with Nubia UI 4.0 baked on top.
During our testing, we found the N1 to be just about an average performer. The company's own UI layer is a hit-and-miss affair. However, some features like 'Edge Gestures' are really great. They allow you to go to any app by sliding your thumb up and down on either edge of the display. These can be configured in the phone's settings.
We found the Automatic Gesture feature to be annoying. While trying to toggle between apps, it pops up more often than required. The device also tends to heat up a little while playing games. At times during our testing, apps like Instagram and Facebook shut down and couldn't work properly again until the device was reset.
The split screen functionality is handy yet not really useful, because it didn't work as intended during our testing. Triggering split screen caused the screen to stop responding and we had to turn the feature off.
The Nubia N1 boasts a large 5,000mAh battery, but doesn't really utilize it to the best of its ability. The battery lasted barely a day with heavy usage, which is something phones with smaller batteries can also manage.

But all is not bad in the Nubia N1. The camera performance is great, at least for the price. The images clicked using the rear camera are truly beautiful and don't pixelate even when zoomed in. Low light camera performance is really good too, and the Pro mode makes things even better.
Verdict
Nubia devices are generally quite good looking, but unfortunately, that's not the case with the N1. Apart from the camera there's nothing extra ordinary about this device. On the contrary, there are smartphones like Coolpad Note 5 and Moto G4 which have better specifications and look good too, despite falling under the same price bracket as the Nubia N1. Consequently, we don't think that the Nubia N1 is a value-for-money smartphone.
Of the above mentioned alternatives, you can go for the Moto G4 is you prefer stock Android experience. If you want a well rounded handset, the Coolpad Note 5 isn't bad either.
