Nubia Z11 review: OnePlus 3T's hottest competition

Nubia is a sub-brand of ZTE that's now trying hard to make inroads into the Indian market without the ZTE branding. Earlier this year, the company aunched its
ZTE Nubia Z11 Mini
smartphone for photography enthusiasts. And Recently, Nubia followed that up with the launch of its Z11 flagship smartphone.Priced at Rs 29,999, the Z11 comes with all the high-end specifications one could think of and a wonderful camera for those who love taking photos. But does this smartphone offer enough to stand out and make its mark? We try to find out, in our complete review of the Nubia Z11.
Design and display
Nubia Z11 is certainly one of the finest looking devices that we've come across lately. The smartphone offers solid build quality and is also comfortable to hold. The handset features a rectangular slab-like design and comes with a full metal unibody construction. It has rounded edges and slight tapers around the back and sides, which help in providing a good grip on the device. Like all other Nubia smartphones, the Z11 also has red accents which make the device stand out. The camera located on the back is surrounded by a red ring and the soft touch navigation keys are also red in colour.
Coming to the sides, the power button and volume rocker are placed on the right, whereas the SIM card tray is on the left. The buttons are made of metal and offer a nice and comfortable feel. The front has the 5.5-inch display, below which lie three capacitive keys (Out of these, the Back and Recent keys are only visible when they are backlit). The top of the smartphone houses a 3.5mm audio jack along with an IR blaster. At the bottom, there is a USB Type-C charging port and dual stereo speakers on the either side.
As for the rear panel, it's made up of polycarbonate which gives it a smooth grip. The rear is home to a 16MP camera accompanied with dual LED flash, a fingerprint sensor and the Nubia branding.
The Nubia Z11 flaunts a 5.5-inch HD display of 1080x1920 pixel resolution. The bezel-less display is protected with a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 3 on top. The display is very bright and offers plenty of sharpness with pretty decent viewing angles. We found it to be pretty good during our testing. Whether you're reading books or watching movies, the

The bezel-less display is slightly curved on the sides, which further enhances the overall look of the device. Moreover, the company has added some software-based features which make the display even more useful. For instance, users can perform functions like adjusting the display brightness by sliding two fingers up and down along the edges of the display, swiping up or down from the edge to switch between apps that are running in the background and more. Users can activate these features from the Settings menu.
All-in-all, we can say that we found the overall build quality of the Nubia Z11 to be definitely premium.
Performance and Camera
The Nubia Z11 is powered by quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor backed by Adreno 530 GPU and 6GB of RAM. For the price, these specifications are pretty good and make the Z11 an instant competitor to the recently launched OnePlus 3T.
During our testing, the smartphone performed all regular tasks really well. Everything from multi-tasking to app-switching works well. The smartphone doesn't have a dedicated key for recent apps, so you have to long press the back button to kill the recent apps. The apps appear in a horizontal swiping view, enabling you to see only a couple of them at a time. You can switch between them by swiping back and forth.
The smartphone comes with 64GB of onboard storage and accepts microSD cards of up to 256GB in size. However, it offers hybrid dual-SIM functionality, so you can either use two SIM cards or one SIM card and one microSD card at a time.
During our time with the smartphone, we found the call quality to be fine. Signal reception is also good and the 4G capable Z11 is compatible with all supporting networks, including Reliance Jio.
The fingerprint sensor, placed on the rear panel of the device, works accurately and doesn't require much time to set up.
Talking about the audio quality, the Nubia Z11 comes with stereo speakers placed at the bottom, which offered a nice audio experience during our time with the handset. Audio is pretty loud and clear when played on loudspeaker. The company is offering a nice pair of Red-coloured headphones, which we found to be pretty good.
Nubia Z11 is backed by a 3,000mAh battery with fast charging support. During our testing, the battery lasted a day easily with moderate use.
On the software front, the Nubia Z11 runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow topped with the company's own UI. The UI is a bit cluttered as there is no app drawer and all apps are placed on the home screen of the device. Along with this, the company has also incorporated some interesting features in the software to further enhance the user experience.
For instance, you can long press the fingerprint sensor or hold the volume down button to take a long scrollable screenshot and also create a recording of the screen.
The smartphone can handle split-screen multi-tasking easily. In order to enter the split screen mode, the users just need to swipe up from the bottom.
Jumping to the camera, the Nubia Z11 features a 16MP rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, optical image stabilization (OIS), phase detection auto focus and dual-LED flash. It also has an 8MP front-facing camera for selfies. The camera app is clean and easy to use. You can swipe left to right to switch between the different camera modes. The camera offers some really interesting modes too. For instance, there is a clone mode, which overlaps several photos.
Another worth mentioning feature is the electronic aperture, which allows you to select an aperture from as wide as f/2.8, to as narrow as f/4.4. Changing the aperture also changes the shutter speed from as quick as 0.3 seconds to as long as 72 seconds. The longer shutter speed allows smooth motion blur capture with moving objects, while still keeping everything that is stationary in focus.
The picture quality of the Z11's really good and images captured offer great detailing and colour reproduction. The camera performs really well in both indoor and outdoor conditions.
Along with the rear camera, the 8MP front camera also performed quite well in our testing. It offers some beautification features which further enhance the look.
