Smartphones are getting faster and more powerful by the day. It won't be an exaggeration to say that soon, they'll all but replace our PCs.

In fact, the sales of computers have (largely) been on a steady decline for quite a while now. However, this hasn't stopped PC manufacturers from experimenting with new form factors and launching novel products. One such relatively new category of PCs is that of hybrids (or 2-in-1s), which can pull off double-duty as both laptops and tablets. But even though 2-in-1 devices like Microsoft Surface Pro 4 and Asus Transformer 3 Pro are great, it's the Lenovo Yoga Book that might just turn out to be the actual 'killer' convertible.

From a Real Pen stylus to an on-demand Halo touch keyboard that can appear and vanish as you please, the Yoga Book has quite some innovations to boast. But the question remains - Is this seemingly futuristic convertible any good at handling the daily computing tasks of the present? And also if it is, does it really matter at a price tag of Rs 50,000?

We find out, in our review of the Lenovo Yoga Book.

Design and build quality

Even though not exactly a head turner, the Lenovo Yoga Book still looks strikingly good. At around 690gms, it's lightweight and portable enough to be carried in a purse or a handbag and taken around anywhere. It has a 10.1-inch FHD IPS LCD display, joined with the lower module with Lenovo's unique 'Watchband' hinge. Above the display is a 2MP video-calling camera.

The lower module has a microUSB port, a hybrid 4G nano SIM/microSD card tray, a mini HDMI port and a speaker grille on the left. Move to the right, and you'll find a 3.5mm audio jack, volume rocker, another tiny speaker grille and the power/standby key. The touch-sensitive halo keyboard is faintly visible when it's not backlit. On its top right corner is a keyboard/pen mode toggle button, along with an 8MP autofocus primary camera. The underside of the lower module is completely bare.

All in all, I found the Yoga Book to be a sturdy and well-built convertible. Even when it's being used in funky modes like tent and is rotated a full 360 degrees, it doesn't creak or feel as if it's going to fall apart.

Display

The Yoga Book has a 10.1-inch Full HD multitouch display of 1920x1080 pixel resolution. And having used it for a while for enjoying everything from high-resolution movies to games, I'd say that it's really good, despite being a relatively standard affair.

The Yoga Book's display is quite bright and has a fairly accurate colour reproduction. It's pretty usable under direct sunlight and thanks to the high-pixel density, renders everything from text to videos with tack sharp detail. So go ahead, play some games and watch a couple of movies. You won't be disappointed

Performance, Note-taking functionality and Halo keyboard.

Delivering power to the Yoga Book is an Intel Atom CPU paired with 4GB of RAM. Having 64GB of internal storage, the convertible also accepts microSD cards of up to 128GB in size.

As the innards of the Yoga Book may have you believe, the hybrid is just about okay for lightweight computing tasks such as document editing, web browsing, occasional media consumption and casual gaming. Just don't expect this thing to run Photoshop or stream 4K videos.

But the story doesn't end here, because the Lenovo Yoga Book isn't a regular netbook. It comes with a truly unique touch-sensitive Halo keyboard that can be activated with the touch of a button when you want it. When deactivated, the keyboard's surface can be used to write or draw on, with the included Real Pen stylus. It also works with Windows 10 Inkspace-compatible apps like Sketchpad and Sticky Notes.

After using it for a good few days, I can say that the note-taking with the Real Pen stylus is plain amazing. Just write on the keyboard's surface and see your doodles and handwritten text appear magically on the screen.

I used the included notepad to jot down notes with the Real Pen stylus and it was incredible to see them all getting digitized in real-time. You have to see it to believe it.

Let's talk about the Yoga Book's second standout feature - the Halo Keyboard. I used it for typing a handful of documents over the review period. What do I think?

Well, I'd say that while the Halo keyboard is indeed futuristic, it's also frustratingly cumbersome to use.

Even though the keyboard offers haptic vibration feedback, there are too many inevitable typos and incorrect keypresses (or taps) that happen when using it. There's a software-based autocorrect functionality built-in, but frankly, it doesn't help much.

So if you plan on using the Lenovo Yoga Book for lengthy document typing/editing work, be prepared to relearn typing from scratch for a month or two. I guess that's the price you always have to pay for using something cutting-edge. You have to adapt.

Lastly, a word about battery life. Lenovo claims that the Yoga Book can go for of up to 13 hours when its 8,500mAh cell is fully topped up. During my testing, I managed to get around 9-10

hours of usage from it. This involved some web browsing, lightweight gaming and document editing using the Real Pen stylus. This is really good, given the fact that the Yoga Book is much more than just a regular PC.

Verdict

There's no denying the fact that the Lenovo Yoga Book represents an altogether different class of PCs. Features like the Halo keyboard and real-time digitization of notes jotted down using the Real Pen stylus make it a one-of-a-kind gadget. But as futuristic as the Yoga Book is, it's not really usable for today's day-to-day computing tasks.

I'll sum things up by saying this. If you can put up with the cumbersome typing experience and don't mind paying a little extra for the innovations, go ahead and get the Yoga Book. But if you want something that can serve as a more 'traditional' laptop and is also more powerful (at least from the perspective of raw specifications), there are a lot better options you can get for your Rs 50,000.
