Hyve Pryme review: India's 'very own' deca-core smartphone

For quite some time, smartphone manufacturers have emphasized on the importance of features like more RAM, higher megapixel count and big batteries. But now, the focus seems to be shifting towards processors.

Back in 2016, Zopo launched the world's first deca-core smartphone - Speed 8, at Rs 29,999. And now, India-based Hyve has come with its own deca-core handset - Pryme. Compared to the Speed 8, the Hyve Pryme is priced at a much lower Rs 17,999. But is it any good?

We used the smartphone for a few days and here is our review.

Design and display

In terms of looks, the Hyve Pryme looks generic and quite similar to other smartphones available in the market right now. It has a metallic unibody design with rounded corners and a 2.5D arc glass curved display.

Talking about the front, the Pryme has an earpiece, an 8MP selfie shooter and the usual array of sensors above the display. There are no physical buttons on the front, as the phone has on-screen navigation buttons. The front is primarily dominated by a 5.7-inch Full HD display of 1080x1920 pixel resolution.

During our testing, we found the display to be decent. Its colour reproduction is accurate and viewing angles are fairly good as well.

Hyve Pryme offers some interesting features such as ClearMotion (which enhances video playback) and Miravision (adjusts picture quality according to user requirements).

The non-removable back panel of the Hyve Pryme has a protruding 13MP rear camera, along with an LED flash and Hyve branding at the bottom.

While the USB-Type C port is placed at the bottom along with the speaker grille, a 3.5mm audio jack sits at the top. The power button and the volume rocker are placed on the right edge, while the left has a dual-SIM and microSD card tray.

Overall, we found the Hyve Pryme to be a well-built device. That said, its design isn't exciting.

Performance and camera

Hyve Pryme is powered by a deca-core MediaTek Helio X20 processor paired with 4GB of RAM. The ten cores are divided into three clusters - dual-core Cortex A72 2.3-2.5GHz, quad-core Cortex A53 2.0GHz and quad-core Cortex A53 1.4GHz. This means that the tasks are assigned to the clusters based on their processing needs.

As per the company, simple tasks like messaging get only lower cores while demanding tasks like gaming get all the ten cores. This is claimed to make the performance of the smartphone better.

In other specs, Hyve Pryme offers 32GB of internal storage and supports microSD cards of up to 200GB. It runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

During our time with the device, we found the overall performance of the Hyve Pryme to be quite impressive. We used the smartphone for games such as Asphalt 8: Airborne and for multi-tabbed browsing with Google Chrome, and didn't experience any lag or heating issues whatsoever. The fingerprint sensor, too, works fine and is quite easy to set up. The sound quality from the speaker is quite good. The fingerprint sensor comes with a Touch2Call feature that lets users call contacts via fingerprints. In our testing, it worked quite well.

As for the cellular reception, it was good during our time with the smartphone. Call quality is appreciably good, even in areas of problematic coverage such as basements and elevators.

Coming to the battery life, Hyve Pryme's 3,500mAh battery easily lasted us a full day on a single charge. This included playing games and browsing social media, all while staying connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data.

The phone offfers a feature called Turbo download, that lets you download files over 20MB faster using Wi-Fi and 4G/3G networks.

Coming to the cameras, Hyve Pryme features a 13MP rear camera with dual LED flash. As for the front, it has an 8MP selfie camera with front flash. The camera app itself has modes like HDR and Panorama, among others.

After playing around with the device for a while, we can certainly say that camera experience with the Hyve Pryme is not really that good. The photos that we took using the rear camera were, for the most part, average. The front camera isn't very impressive either.

Verdict

Bearing a price tag of Rs 17,999, the Hyve Pryme offers decently-powerful specifications such as a deca-core processor, 4GB RAM and 3,500mAh battery. But its camera experience is a letdown.

In terms of alternatives, another deca-core smartphone is the above mentioned Zopo Speed 8 but that comes at a higher price of Rs 29,999. In the same price segment, you may consider the Asus Zenfone Max (5.5-inch variant) as well.
