Intex LED-5800 FHD review: Nothing extra-ordinary

Just like Micromax, Intex is another home-grown technology company that was primarily known for making affordable smartphones till a few years ago, but now produces a slew of consumer electronics such as TVs and washing machines.

Speaking of TVs, Intex's LED TV line-up is quite expansive and includes everything from basic HD-ready models to 'Smart' offerings. And with the recent addition of two new launches - LED-5800 FHD and LED-6500 FHD, it's gotten bigger. But do these new TVs actually pack any punch, or they are just two random additions to an already-crowded TV market?

We used the smaller of Intex's newly-launched duo - LED-5800 FHD for a few days to find out whether it's actually worth the hefty asking price of Rs 74,999, and here is our review.

Design

For a TV that costs Rs 75,000, the Intex LED-5800 FHD is extremely bland-looking. Its front comprises a 58-inch (147cm) Full HD panel, with a Silver coloured metallic bezel/frame running along its entire perimeter. The frame is completely bare, except for an Intex logo in the centre of the bottom edge. On the right end of the lower edge, there's a multi-purpose Power button with joystick-like functionality. Based on whether the TV is in standby or OSD mode, the power key can be turn the device On/Off, adjust volume and change channels.

Intex LED-5800 FHD TV comes with two L-shaped base supports which can be fixed on its lower edge (one each on the left and right) with screws. Once done, the TV can be set on any flat surface such as a table. In addition to this, the back panel has the provision to fix a wall-mount bracket to the TV as well.

Coming to the back, it's entirely made of plastic. The power supply port is in the lower left section, while the right side has all the connectivity ports arranged in an L-shaped fashion. The edge facing downward has the following ports (left-to-right) - Digital Audio Out (1), USB (1), HDMI (2), PC VGA In (1), Antenna In (1) and 3.5mm Audio Out (1). On the other hand, the edge facing the right outward side houses the following ports (top-to-bottom) - USB (1), HDMI (1) and AV In [with 1 Video, 1 Left channel audio and 1 Right channel audio]. The lower edge also has two bottom firing speakers, one each at the left and right.
The remote controller itself is a pretty basic affair. Made of plastic, it has the usual channel selector button grid (0-9), volume and channel selector combo buttons, playback control buttons and Eye Safe mode toggle button.

In summation, we found the overall design to be disappointing. For a product with such a hefty price tag, Intex surely could've worked a little more on the aesthetics.
Display and performance

The Intex LED-5800 FHD TV comes with a 58-inch (147cm) Full HD panel of 1920x1080 pixel resolution. Once the TV is powered on, the source button on the remote controller (or short pressing the power button) can be used to toggle between different input sources - Analogue TV, HDMI1,HDMI2, HDMI3, USB, AV and PC.

During our testing, we played/viewed a variety of media on the Intex LED-5800 FHD. This included everything from high-resolution images to Full HD videos to audio tracks. And even though it's not exactly bad, we're dismayed to say that Intex's new TV offers nothing 'extra' that can make it stand out among the sea of other LED TVs out there.

For the most part, the LED-5800 FHD plays all sorts of videos appreciably well. This includes both HD (720p) and Full HD (1080p) content. In fact, even 60fps videos play as they should. But we couldn't help but notice the occasional 'choppiness' and pixelation during video playback. And even though the viewing angles and distance both are really good, the colour distortion makes the experience less-than-perfect.

On a positive note, the audio output from the LED-5800 FHD's dual bottom-firing speakers is quite loud and clear. In fact, it gets a bit too loud at higher volume levels but still doesn't distort. It's probably because of the Digital Noise Reduction technology working behind the scenes.

The Intex LED-5800 FHD comes with an 'Eye Safe-T Matrix Technology' that is claimed to reduce the strain on the eyes while watching the TV for extended amounts of time. It can be toggled via its dedicated button on the remote controller or via the Picture Effect Menu. In our testing, Eye Safe-T Matrix did help in making the content easier on the eyes.

Other than that, the Intex LED-5800 FHD just has a regular menu with standard options such as picture effects, audio modes and sleep timer. The TV's built-in software can be upgraded by copying the update file to a USB flash drive and plugging it into the TV.

Speaking about the software, it's highly worth mentioning that the Intex LED-5800 FHD is not a smartTV. This means it doesn't have any version of Android (or any other OS, for that matter) and thus can't run any apps. This is just a regular LED TV. Oh, and it can't play 4K content at all. Given the steep price of the LED-5800 FHD, this is something we found this to be extremely baffling.

Verdict

Intex's new LED-5800 FHD is a fairly decent LED TV. It also comes with some really nice features such as clear and loud audio output, all standard input modes and an 'eye care' feature that works quite well. But the LED-5800's many negatives outweigh its positives by a stretch.

This new offering from Intex looks mundane. It's not a smartTV either, so you can't extend its functionality via any third-party apps. Then there's the fact that it can't play 4K content. Putting all these together against a steep price of Rs 74,999, we can't recommend buying the Intex LED-5800 FHD.

For a little over two-third of the Intex LED-5800 FHD's price, you can get LeEco's 55-inch Ultra HD Smart LED TV that not only has 4K support, but runs all Android apps as well. For about the same price as the LED-5800, Vu's 60-inch Ultra HD 4K Smart LED TV is a good option too.
