NEW DELHI: This year has been a special one for Acer. The Taiwan-based based PC maker has launched several laptops catering to different audience, and even broke some world records. While its Predator 21X is the world's first laptop to sport a curved display, the Swift 7 now holds the distinction of being the 'new' slimmest laptop in the world. Until now, that title belonged to HP's Spectre. But a difference of 0.42mm flipped the course of the game in Acer's favour.

The company launched Swift 7 at IFA 2016 back in September and recently, brought it to India. With price starting at Rs 99,999, the Acer Swift 7 is clearly targeted at customers who want powerful specs and portability, and don't mind paying the premium for it. It's definitely not like any regular laptop that you can get at around Rs 45,000.

The Swift 7 appears to be a really well-executed product and comes with an impressive spec sheet too. But does it deserve a place in your holiday shopping list? Let's find out.

Design and display

First things first, the Swift 7 is crazy slim. It measures just around 9.98mm in thickness, which makes it one of the most portable laptops available right now. In comparison, the closest rival HP Spectre is about 10.4mm thick.

The Swift 7's metallic build and Gold-coloured inner surface, combined with a matte Black aluminium exterior impart it a premium appeal from all angles.

There are four rubber feet at the base of the laptop, along with two Dolby Audio-powered speakers. During our testing, we found the speakers to be impressively loud and clear. In fact, we'd say that they are among the best laptop speakers that we've come across. However, the bottom-firing placement of the speakers does cause the sound to get a little muffled when the laptop is placed on a soft surface.

As for the keyboard, it's just about average and we got used to it quite easily. The key spacing is similar to any other regular laptop, but the difference in typing experience is glaring. Coming from a regular HP laptop, typing on the Swift 7's keyboard feels like hitting a flat surface. There's enough space to rest the palms, so that's good too. That said, the keyboard is not backlit.

Acer Swift 7's clickable 'Precision' touchpad is pretty spacious and has really good accuracy. It's complemented by shining chamfered edges, which are not seen anywhere else on the laptop. It also supports two and three finger swipe gestures so navigation is easier.

There are two LEDs above the keyboard that indicate power and HDD status. That's it. No fancy Touch Bars here.

Now all of this sounds really great, except for one thing. The connectivity ports.
Acer Swift 7 has only two USB Type-C ports on the right. But that's something you'd have to live with if you want to get the world's slimmest laptop.

So be courageous, and get ready to buy some dongles.

When it comes to the display, the Swift 7 is not bad at all. It has a 13.3-inch Full HD IPS panel of 1920x1080 pixel resolution. The screen design stays traditional, with an inch (or slightly more) of bezel extending on all the four sides. This naturally means increased footprint for the device. In our opinion, the Swift 7 could've scored a homerun if the display were a little like that on the Dell XPS 13.

Nonetheless, the colours are vibrant and content look well-saturated, thanks to Acer's colour Intelligence technology. It adjusts gamma and saturation in real-time and does a lot more behind-the-scenes. Of course, there's an inbuilt option to tweak the colour temperature of the laptop's display or the text size. The IPS panel is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 5, the latest out there. So you may not need an additional screen guard for the Swift 7. Attached with the keyboard are two hinges and the display does not wobble while typing.

In summation, Acer Swift 7 has a great design, impressive build quality and a good display, all of which get a big thumbs-up from us. But what about its performance? That's what we're going to talk about next.

Overall performance

Unlike HP Spectre, the Acer Swift 7 sports Intel's latest 7th gen 'Kaby Lake' CPU along with 8GB of RAM. And as expected, it handles everything thrown at it without any effort.

During our testing, we worked on around 10-15 applications simultaneously and found Acer Swift 7 to shine at day-to-day performance. From editing software like the Adobe Premier Pro and Adobe Photoshop 3D to graphic intensive games like Counter Strike, the Swift 7 works just fine with everything.

However, some heating issues remain. While playing Asphalt 8: Airborne, a game that Intel Kaby Lake CPU can easily handle, we found the area above the keyboard getting heated up. But given the Swift 7's thickness, the lack of cooling vents is understandable.

Running Windows 10 (Home version), the laptop features all the new functions Microsoft has included in its latest OS. As for apps, besides getting access to the Windows Store, users also get some pre-installed programs out-of-the-box. These include Acer Care Centre, Acer Documents, Acer Quick Access and Acer Recovery Management.

The Swift 7 has 256GB of built-in SSD storage, which makes it pretty fast when it comes to loading heavy files. Of course, Windows 10 itself takes up around 21GB so you're left with about 237GB of usable space. If you have a collection of TV shows, movies or any other large data, keep an external drive handy.

There's a built-in front camera, which we found to be just about average. It can take images and record videos in HD resolution.

Battery is (and has always been) one of the major factors when buying a laptop laptops these days. And we're happy to report that the Swift 7 doesn't disappoint in this regard.

Acer Swift 7 packs 42.66Wh battery. While it doesn't sound much in theory but in our testing, easily lasted a day with average use. That's partly because of the highly efficient Kaby Lake CPU too. Heavy users may need to charge it once in few hours, but we were quite satisfied with the overall performance.

Verdict

Acer's new Swift 7 almost nails it in every aspect, be it design, performance or the battery. If you want a powerful crazy thin laptop, the Acer Swift 7 is your best option. Of course, the Rs 99,999 base price is a bit high, but you're getting the slimmest laptop in the world with the latest processor out there.

But then, not everyone likes to burn their fingers on super slim laptops. For those who want alternatives, the HP Spectre is a good option. However, bear in mind that it comes with an older 6th-gen Skylake CPU, even if it looks more stylish. If you are not much crazy about the thickness of laptops, you can go for options like the HP Pavilion 15au-118tx or the new Dell Inspiron 15 5000 series. Both come with 7th Gen Intel Core processors.
