CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu has tied up with Microsoft to accelerate digital literacy in schools.
As part of the agreement, Microsoft will begin work in seven schools identified by the Government to train students and teachers on coding and gaming, application development, robotics and entrepreneurship.
The partnership was announced by KA Sengottaiyan, Minister for School Education, Tamil Nadu at an event attended by academia and regulators.
Also on offer is Microsoft’s Innovative Educator Programme to be introduced in primary, secondary, vocational and tertiary education schools across the state. Additionally, the company will also provide digital literacy certification for District Education Officers in Tamil Nadu.
In a statement, Sengottaiyan said,” We are committed to harnessing the power of the technology to reform education in Tamil Nadu and make our youth future-ready with the essential digital skills. We have a longstanding partnership with Microsoft and believe their expertise in this area makes them an ideal partner for our transformational initiatives.”
Microsoft has a “Partner network” to software suites and online professional development courses tailored for teachers and administrators. The company has so far trained 48,000 teachers in Tamil Nadu on usage of Information and Communication Technology. Microsoft has adopted a plan to train teachers, who in turn will be able impart the skills to their peers.
