Lenovo Yoga 720 Review

Lenovo Yoga 720 review: Jack of all trades
If there's one thing you can say with certainty about hybrid laptops is that they do pique a great sense of curiosity. This sense of curiosity has been around since the time of the first hybrid was launched. Over the years, hybrid laptops have enhanced performance, ease of usage and give consumers a device which works efficiently both as a laptop and a tablet. Lenovo is one brand which has been at the forefront of hybrid laptops with its popular Yoga series. Recently, the company launched its Yoga 720 - a stylish looking hybrid laptop - and we got a chance to use it for a few days. Read our review to find out how the Yoga 720 scores...

Design

The review unit that landed with us was 13.3-inch gold variant and on first glance you can tell that Lenovo has worked hard on the design. Weighing just 1.3 kg, the device is slim, sleek and surprisingly doesn't compromise on portability either. The aluminum body is eye-catching and the matte finish isn't a magnet to smudges or fingerprints. The screen folds back seamlessly and the device works perfectly in Stand or Tent Mode.

The 13.3-inch full HD IPS touchscreen is impressive and Lenovo has used an antiglare panel which is put to good use in the Yoga 720. The display isn't striking and the brightness levels are just about reasonable. There's an interesting feature called Paper Display which helps you adjust the level of blue light filter based on ambient lighting. There's a backlit power button and a USB 3.0 port on the right. The left side is home to two USB Type-C ports and a headphone socket. Surprisingly, Lenovo has given the SD card reader a complete miss.

The chiclet style keyboard - it's getting pretty common now - has adequate spacing between keys. There's ample palm rest area and the trackpad is large enough to work smoothly. The Yoga 720 comes with a fingerprint sensor - which works efficiently - and is located on the right side of the keyboard.

There's an Active Pen which works with a single AAAA battery and comes with a plastic holder which can be fitted into the USB port. The speakers find their place at the bottom of the laptop next to the air vents.

Performance
The review unit we got ran on an Intel Core i7-7500U CPU, 8GB of dual-channel DDR4 RAM (2133MHz). There's Windows 10 Home 64-bit and the usual Lenovo software bundled in the laptop. A hybrid's performance has to be judged on how it works as a laptop as well as a tablet. As a laptop, there isn't much to complain about the Lenovo Yoga720. There aren't any heating issues and most programs load pretty quickly. Even when you play games, the laptop doesn't heat up. When it comes to multimedia content, the Yoga 720 is an efficient performer. The display is competent enough to watch videos and is ably supported by the JBL speakers. Since the speakers are located at the bottom, they do get muffled when the device is being used in laptop mode but the audio quality doesn't suffer.

We ran PC Mark and 3D Mark performance tests on the Yoga 720 and got scores of 14040 and 1677 respectively.

The tablet form is where the Yoga 720 really shines and the Active Pen gets, well, really active. The Active Pen works smoothly and you can hover it over icons by using the two buttons that are located at the bottom. They do the function of a mouse's left and right click. The capacitive touch response of the screen is more than satisfactory. The Active Pen can be used effectively for sketching, drawing in the paint apps. We are sure that those who use Photoshop extensively will really dig in the Active Pen. Using the Yoga 720 as a tablet does get exhausting after a while if you're too accustomed to using an iPad or any other tablet. There's an HD webcam that delivers competent images.

The battery life of Yoga720 is - like most other functions - pretty competent. On regular usage, the laptop lasts up to seven hours, which is good enough when compared to other devices.

Verdict

In case you're looking for a hybrid device, the Yoga 720 fits the bill perfectly. Priced at Rs 1,10,175 for the i7 8GB variant it serves the dual functionality purpose extremely well. It's thin, sleek and delivers satisfactory performance. There are other options - like Dell XPS 13 and HP Spectre series - but they are priced slightly higher than this offering from Lenovo.

Yoga 720 works fine as a laptop and delivers impressive performance as a tablet. There are certain aspects which could have been improved - display for starters - but these are issues which shouldn't sway your buying decision too much. This is a premium product which has standout looks and to go with it gives reliable performance. You won't go wrong buying it if the hybrid is your choice of device. If you're looking for a laptop alone, then there are better options. And if you're looking for just a tablet, then there's always the iPad.
