Epson Home Theatre TW6700 2D/3D Projector Review

Epson Home Theatre TW6700 2D/3D Projector review: Good home theatre companion
In the last couple of years how we consume video content has undergone a drastic transformation. It's partly down to streaming options and apps and the need to have content on your fingertips. While there's convenience in watching a movie or video on a smartphone or tablet, nothing comes close to the full-screen viewing experience. And if it's from the comfort of your home, it's even better.

Home theatre and projectors come in handy for those who are seeking this "comfortable" experience. Epson believes it has made a projector which could cater to those looking for an impressive home theatre experience.

The Epson Home Theatre TW6700 2D/3D projector priced at Rs 1,29,759 is for true movie buffs. It comes bundled with a bunch of features all tried and tested by us Read it all in our review below:

Design

At first glance, the Epson TW6700 can overwhelm you with its sheer size. Don't fret about the bulk as Epson has kept it big for valid reasons - more on that later in the review. The projector has a plastic body with main controls on the top of the device, the screen alignment controls at the front while the connecting ports are all located at the back of the device.

The massive speaker grilles are located at the back with ventilating port right up front next to the lens. Although the device looks chunky, due to its plastic body it doesn't weigh so much. It comes with an HDMI cable, one power cable, one remote control and two 3D glasses.

Performance

The Epson TW6700 is mainly targeted at customers looking to enhance their home entertainment options. It uses 3LCD technology which means there are three LCD panel chips in its image generation engine for better projection. It has a 0.61-inh wide panel with full HD resolution. It uses optical zoom with a focal length of 18.2 - 29.2mm and it has a lamp life of approximately 3,500 hours on high usage, 4,000 hours on medium usage and up to 5,000 hours on eco mode.

When it comes to brightness the device' colour light output equals to 3,000 lumens with a contrast ratio of 70,000:1. We mentioned about the bulkiness of the device and one of the reasons for it being so is due to its 10W X2 stereo speakers. Apart from 3D support being one of its main highlights, the stereo speakers are not to be ignored. Let's just say that if you wish to put the projector in your bedroom, you will not be requiring external speakers.

The sound delivery is loud and crisp with incredible bass and the home theatre experience just gets real because of the high-quality sound output. Speaking of projection, the visuals are vibrant and watching a full HD movie is a treat for sore eyes. You can adjust the lens according to your preference and not compromise on the experience from different viewing angles. If you're only watching full HD 2D content, you won't have any complaints.

Another thing the Epson TW6700 brings to the table is 3D support. Once you enable 3D on your device, you can pair the 3D glasses that come along and watch 3D videos and movies. We tried some cool graphics intensive 3D videos and the experience was satisfactory. It is obviously way better than most of the lower budget projectors with 3D support but if you're someone looking to buy this projector just for the 3D capability, it might not be the right option for you.

Although it's a feature to have, there is a lot of room for improvement. Having said that, the 3D glasses that comes with the device are Full HD 3D RF glasses, which are good quality glasses. You can charge them using the microUSB port and pairing them with the device is as easy as it gets. As soon as you turn them on, press and hold the 'pair' button on the glasses and the device will recognise it in a jiffy.

On the connectivity front, the device has 2 HDMI ports, 1 micro USB port, 1 USB type A port and 1 15 pin analog input. The TW6700 also supports Wireless connectivity but only through ELPAP10 (Wireless LAN module).

Verdict

Given the price of Rs 1,29,759 it is clear that this device is not meant for everyone. The 3D support is also one of the reasons for its steep price. If 3D feature is not that big a deal for you, you can choose something less expensive. But if you don't mind splurging a little extra for good projection and brilliant sound quality, the Epson TW6700 is an ideal upgrade for your home theatre.

And if you're looking for something cheaper there are other Epson budget projectors and brands like BenQ also offer a variety of budget-friendly
