For the longest time, one Apple app has got the step brotherly treatment: iBooks. However, it looks like Apple is set to give it a makeover and bring it back to life. According to a report published in Bloomberg, the app will now be called Books. The report mentions that the app will be released in the "coming months".
Apple has also taken on board a new director to supervise work on its Books app. The Bloomberg report further mentioned that the interface of the app will also be redesigned. It will be simpler, will have a separate tab for audiobooks and highlight books that are being currently read.
The new man in charge of the app is Kashif Zafar who has worked with Barnes and Noble's Nook division and Audible in the past.
The move to redesign the Books app is an indication that Apple wants to give Amazon a tough fight in this space. Both the tech giants are coming up against each other in other categories as well, the recent one being smart speakers.
While Amazon already has its Echo range of speakers, Apple's HomePod went on pre-orders starting today. Apple HomePod will start shipping from February 9 in US, UK and Australia. It will be available in Black and White colour options.
The device is under 7-inch tall and takes it cylindrical design cues from the Mac Pro. The device has a seven array tweeter with individual drivers placed at the bottom, along with precision acoustic horns. On top is a woofer, which along with the tweeters, is claimed to deliver distortion-free music. Apple's A8 CPU powers the device and is expected to rival Google Home and Amazon's Echo.
With the Books app being redesigned, expect fireworks to happen in that space as well.
