New Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus release date, news and features 2017

Motorola has just confirmed the Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus, two new budget handsets from parent company Lenovo that aim to offer higher end spec than most other budget devices.
The Moto G4 , Moto G4 Plus and Moto G4 Play were some of the best budget phones of 2016, and Motorola has a few notable improvements to this year's line of phones.
If you’re after a low-cost, relatively high-spec phone upgrade soon, you should keep an eye on the Moto G5 or Moto G5 Plus.

Cut to the chase

  • What is it? The next value-focused phone lineup from Motorola
  • When is it out? March 2017
  • What will it cost? Low price – starting at €199 (£169, AU$330) for the Moto G5 and €229 (£195, AU $315) for the Moto G5 Plus

Moto G5 price and release date

Motorola has confirmed the Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus at its press conference in Barcelona just before MWC 2017.
The company confirmed both the Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus will be launching in March, but as yet Motorola hasn't confirmed precisely which markets the phone will be launched.
Motorola has only announced the Moto G5 Plus on its US website, suggesting the Moto G5 may not it to America.
Price points for both phones are on the low and reasonable end with the Moto G5 will costing €199 (about $210, £170, AU$270) while the Moto G5 Plus is a touch more at €229 (about £195, $240, AU$320).

Moto G5 design

For the first time Motorola will bring a metal design into the Moto G range and it'll feature on both the G5 and the G5 Plus.
The design looks far more premium than the plasticy material used on the Moto G4 range and makes the phone feel and look like even better value for money.
There's a large camera sensor on the back with the Motorola logo emblazoned just below it.
To add a little more peace of mind with regards to your phone's security, the Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus feature a fingerprint sensor.
Last year only the Moto G4 Plus featured the scanner, so it's nice to see Motorola expanding this feature across the Moto G line as it's something we've come to expect even in mid-rane devices.

Moto G5 display

The Moto G5 features a 5-inch Full HD display while the Moto G5 Plus is a touch larger at 5.2 inches.
Motorola has seen fit to drop the Moto G Plus screen size down a touch, but it's great to see the company has finally dropped the 720p resolution option from this range and is now focusing on Full HD models.
That's right, both the G5 and the G5 Plus will feature Full HD displays with 1920x1080 resolution.

Moto G5 specs and features

Under the hood of the Moto G5 is a 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 system-on-a-chip.
The Moto G5 Plus features a slightly more powerful 2GHz Snapdragon 635 processor.
Motorola's G5 comes with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage inside, but there's no other larger option for this device so you may struggle for space a little.
The Moto G5 Plus however comes with 32GB of storage and you have the choice of either 2GB of RAM or 3GB.
The US will also have the option of a 64GB phone with 4GB of RAM, but it's unclear if this model will be available in any other markets.
Smartphone manufacturers are aware that battery life is increasingly important to a number of users and Motorola is no different. The G5 Plus boasts a 3000 mAh battery with TurboCharging, which Motorola say is capable of providing six hours worth of charge in just 15 minutes.
The G5 doesn't come in at quite the same level, though it does have a 10W rapid charge feature which will still give your phone's battery a significant boost in a short period.
In terms of camera specs, the Moto G5 has a 13 MP rear camera with phase detecting autofocus. The G5 Plus comes in with a slightly lower 12 MP camera, however it does feature dual autofocus pixels which should provide sharper and clearer images regardless.
The Moto G5 does not come with an NFC sensor, while the Moto G5 Plus does. That means you'll have to go for the larger phone if you're looking to use Android Pay on your new device.
The latest Android 7 software is here plus you'll also get access to Google Assistant voice technology. These are the cheapest phone on the market that includes Google Assistant too.
Motorola has also announced it will be bringing Amazon Alexa voice technology to Moto devices in the future, but there's no word if that will come to the Moto G5 or G5 Plus.
