Taking Snapchat head on, Facebook has been adding many Snapchat like features to its range of apps. Today we look at Messenger My Day and try to understand if Facebook has made it more versatile or is just complex now.
Facebook has been beta testing this feature for a while now. Today marks the global availability of this feature. WhileMessenger was initially launched as a simple Facebook chat app, it has since evolved as a community in its own right. Stickers, games, voice calling, video calling and now, you can also share stories with your friends, just like you can do so on Snapchat or Instagram .
However, the question that often comes to my mind is, why? The bottom line is, Facebook does not want you to leave its app and go to other apps to interact with your friends.
Messenger used to be a very good app for instant messaging. There were no ads, no annoying animations or features. It was also the first app to pioneer chat heads – something that has since caught on in many other services. If all you did on Facebook was chat with your friends, you could use Messenger and avoid the rest of the features on Facebook.
While the Messenger app still does not have any ads, it does feel like it has become quite feature packed. Early adopters like me often end up thinking that there is a lot going on inside the app – you have stickers, games, bots, calling and now stories. These features are available on desktop version as well.
However, you might be in for a surprise. Using the My Day feature in Messenger is very easy. Tap on the prominent camera button on the bottom and you can start customizing your story. You can either click a photo or shoot a video, choose an existing one or simply write a message. There are a range of filters you can choose from.
Once you are done with customizing it, you can then select the contacts you want to send the story to. You can also share it with everyone in your list instead of manually selecting contacts. These stories have a lifetime of 24 hours – after 24 hours, they disappear.
Overall, Facebook has done a good job of implementing it. As someone who does not use Snapchat as often, I found Messenger Day to be a much better implementation. The quality of photos and videos clicked using Messenger also seems to be much better compared to Snapchat onAndroid , so that is one more point that you can keep in mind.
While Messenger may no longer be the simple instant messaging app it once was, it is definitely more versatile now. The reason I don't find it complex is because its still not forcing its users to play with the new features. The interface still looks clean and the additional features are integrated in such a way that it does not make it look cluttered.
