An underwater drone which can send real-time video of ships and underwater structure for maintenance and repair operations is the winner of the India edition of AlphaLab Gear National Hardware Cup. EyeROV, developed by IIT alumni Johns T Mathai and Kannappa Palaniappan P was selected as the winner at the contest held at Maker Village in Cochin.The remotely operated underwater vehicle weighs less than 10 kilogram and can work upto a depth of 50 meters. The drone can be navigated to take real-time HD video images to examine ship hulls, undersea cables and bridge moorings eliminating the need for manual inspection.
The EyeROV team will receive a cash prize of Rs 25,000 and will compete with regional winners from seven cities across US and five international teams on April 18-19 for a Grand Prize of $ 50,000, apart from mentorship and being a part of the Pittsburgh headquartered accelerator programme run by AlphaLab Gear for a 3 to 6 month period when the company is ready to launch its product into the market.
AlphaLab Gear is a US based accelerator which provides earlystage product companies with mentorship, and educational sessions with industry.
EyeROV is incubated at Maker Village which has facilities in Cochin and Trivandrum is a project funded by Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY), Government of India, and the Government of Kerala. The facility incubates and supports companies in electronics including Internet of Things, robotics and wearables.
