Toothbrush design has gone through substantial changes over the last few years --from being a stiff manual brush to the sophisticated ones. Electric toothbrushes have catapulted a whole new method recently of cleaning your teeth and gum. These rechargeable toothbrushes also help getting rid of gum diseases and cavities that result from the harmful bacteria in the mouth. Dentists recommend people to switch to electric models, but the question lies in affordability as most of these brushes are way more expensive than the manual toothbrushes.

The oral hygiene company Oral-B has recently launched its Electric toothbrush range Oral B Pro 2000 in India. The rechargeable toothbrush, priced at Rs 5,800, claims to remove 100% more plaque.

The Cross Action design of the Pro 2000 surrounds each tooth with angled bristles and the brush moves up to 48,800 times in two minutes of cleaning. This has a pressure sensor too, to help you avoid hurtful over-brushing.

I have used the Pro 2000 electric toothbrush for over a week and here is what I found.

Design and key features

The toothbrush measures just 2.5cm wide and 3cm thick and weighs about 130g. However, I found it little heavy compared to the manual brush, but not uncomfortable to hold. The brush has two parts --the round brush head and the chassis which has an array of raised grips to reduce the chance of slipping from hand.

The power button sits at the upper end of the chassis and at the lower end is a battery power icon. On the base of the brush is a port for the charging dock to sit.

The brush that came with the box features a CrossAction design with a series of angled bristles designed to remove plaque by reaching more areas of the mouth and deep between the teeth. You can purchase the array of different heads separately as per your needs. The Oral-B Pro 2000 toothbrush is available to buy from Amazon for Rs 5,220.

Performance

The bristles of the brush crisscross at 16 degree angle which oscillate, rotate, and pulsate. The Visible Pressure Sensor on the Pro 2000 lights up to alert you when you are brushing too hard. The On Handle Timer buzzes every 30 seconds to let you know when it’s time to focus on brushing the next quadrant of your mouth. It also alerts you when you have brushed for the dentist-recommended time of 2 minutes.

While it’s important to brush for two minutes a day, it’s difficult to time it. The built-in timer of the brush makes it simple. In my testing, I found the bristles soft and does not cause any irritation even when I pressed hard.

The Pro 2000 is waterproof so you can use it in the shower. The 2-year warranty of the device can be extended by a further year by registering it online on Oral-B’s website.

Battery life

The company claims that Pro 2000 lasts for 7 days. That is based on 14 two minute cleanings or 28 minutes of brushing time. However, I found it little lower; I could use it for only 5 days on a full charge.

Provided in the box is a charging station. The brush sits on the station and you can connect the 2-pin connector to a socket in the bathroom. Charging is slower than most other electrical appliances and the battery status icon flashes red when power is low.

Bottomline

Pro 2000 is an excellent electric everyday toothbrush brush which is effective and easy to use. It feels solid in the hand and is easy to grip hold of. As a first timer user for electric toothbrush, I found it truly useful. However, at Rs 5,800, the toothbrush is little expensive.
