Comparison of iPhone 8 vs Galaxy S8

Well, we are marching towards the end of the first quarter in 2017. While the MWC is over, it is again a busy time for smartphone lovers, as rumors on next generation flagships start popping out. We are primarily interested in learning more about two phones- Galaxy S8 and iPhone 8.

After Note 7’s debacle, all eyes are on Samsung’s upcoming flagship phones, Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus. It is evident that Samsung is not going to leave any stone unturned to make these phones a tremendous hit to retain its lost glory. The initial leaks on the phone suggest Samsung is going on all out specifications blitz, which includes the use of 4K AMOLED display, an iris scanner, a 12MP wide-angle front camera, etc.

On the other hand, Apple has been facing flak for not being innovative with their iPhones. The iPhone 7 is barely different from its predecessor, iPhone 6S. One theory is that Apple has got many groundbreaking features up its sleeve; however, it might have stored them to deploy them on iPhone 8, which will be released marking the 10th anniversary of the original iPhone launch. The iPhone 8 may come with some new features like OLED display, an iris scanner, wireless charging, etc.

Let us delve into all the rumors that were out on these phones till date.

If the rumors turn out to be true, regarding specifications, iPhone 8 is not far behind Galaxy S8. Coming to the display, iPhone 8 may still not sport a 2K display; whereas, Samsung is planning to use the 4K display panel on S8 Plus model. When people are embracing AR and VR, using a display panel with any resolution less than 2K on flagships is not a venial mistake.

In terms of performance, going by the previous records, A11 may outperform Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 and Exynos 9810. While Samsung is gearing up to use a humungous 6GB RAM on S8 Plus, Apple for the first time may use 4GB RAM in one of the iPhone 8 models.

In the camera department, Samsung has been outplaying iPhones. Samsung is yet to use a dual-camera setup on any of their devices, and most probably we will not see it in S8 either. On the flip side, Apple may leverage dual-camera setup to defeat the camera on S8 finally.

When it comes to add-on features, both models may come with an iris scanner and water/dust resistance capabilities. Apple may also make iPhone 8 wireless charging compatible. However, iPhone may still not use any fast charging technology.

Though iPhone 8 will be released sometime in September, its sales are to an extent dependent on the reception of Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus. At this moment, Galaxy S8 holds a slight edge over iPhone 8. Nonetheless, Apple may surprise everyone like what it did with Macbook pro's touch bar.
