TRAI extends date for receiving comment on Net Neutrality till March 15

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has stated that the last date for comments is extended till March 15 for stakeholders, on the contentious net neutrality

Earlier, TRAI had issued a Consultation Paper on Net Neutrality on 4th January, 2017 inviting written comments from the stakeholders by 15th February, 2017 and counter comments by 28th February, 2017.

“On request from the stakeholders, the last date for receipt of written comments, if any, from the stakeholders has been extended up to March 15, 2017, and counter comments by March 22, 2017,” the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India said in a statement.

Till now, the regulatory has conducted the first round of consultation to understand key issues that require attention for framing rules surrounding net neutrality.

Also, the ongoing consultation process was initiated pursuant to reference from the Department of Telecom

The TRAI has also conducted pre-consultation on net-neutrality in previous year, where it discussed various issues- definition of net neutrality, scope of traffic management practices, importance of unrestricted access and transparency, need for preserving customer privacy and national security.

Does this mean an end to Voice over IP?
Under a panel setup by DoT a regulation was proposed regarding the domestic calls made over Internet-based apps like Skype, WhatsApp and Viber by putting them head to head with the services offered by telecom operators.

The recommendation of the panel came under the public scrutiny as it was taking criticizing net neutrality.

However, the committee countered the Facebook’s ambition regarding the access to Internet.org and had suggested liberal approach to app-based international calls.

For now the government said that it will decide on a framework for net neutrality after receiving inputs of TRAI on the subject.
