Recently, I talked about how you could use Facebook’s save feature to bookmark interesting content you find on the social network for viewing or reading later. That feature, however, only covered items you found on Facebook.
Now, Facebook has released two new Chrome extensions. The first lets you save articles and videos you find online outside of Facebook, while the second shares items straight to Facebook similar to how you’d share items on a smartphone.
Save to Facebook for Chrome
Save to Facebook is incredibly easy to use. If you’re already signed in to Facebook via the browser you can start using the extension right away. Otherwise you’ll be prompted to log in.
Once you’re up and running, all you have to do is visit a page you want to save, click the extension’s icon (a white bookmark on a blue background), and a drop-down window appears confirming your content is saved. In the window you’ll also see your most recent save, and a link at the bottom entitled “See All Saved Items” that takes you directly to your saved items section on Facebook.
If you decide you don’t want to save the item you just bookmarked there’s an undo option in the top-right corner of the extension window.
Share to Facebook works a little differently than its save counterpart. When you find something you want to share online click the “Share to Facebook” extension icon (which is just the Facebook logo).
Next, a smaller pop-up window appears instead of a drop-down window. The window contains the story you want to share, plus some room to write your own comments. At the very top on the left is a drop-down menu where you can choose between sharing the item on your own timeline, a friend’s timeline, a group page, or a page that you manage such as a business page. There’s also an option to share via Messenger.
At the very bottom of the window are options to share your location, add a “feeling,” tag friends, and change the recipient list to public, only friends, or a custom list you previously created.
Finally, in the bottom-right is the all-important Post to Facebook button.
Overall, the two Chrome extensions are fairly simple to use and are key tools for any Facebook fan.
