Cons:
UGLY AS SIN; Expensive; Case Material is WAY Too Clingy
Verdict:
If you CRAVE more battery for your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s the Apple Smart Battery Case is definitely worth a look. It's functional and it works great. But there are cheaper non-Apple places, so before taking the plunge have a look around
Apple sneaked out the Apple Smart Battery cover a couple of weeks ago, and after the initial write-ups online it was pretty easy to see why Apple didn’t want too much fanfare about this particular case.
The damn thing is uglier than a bag of spiders dipped in dog excrement.
This is a very un-Apple thing for Apple to do. Usually everything it does is so pristine and “designed” they actually miss useful, unsightly features like USB ports and CD players. Indeed, the first time I saw it I wondered how the hell such a thing ever got off Mr. Ive’s drawing board in the first place.
Maybe he was drunk?
Designed for the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6, the launch of this case is sort of an omission on Apple’s part that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s’ battery life aren’t too good. And this is a good thing too because the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6s’ battery performance, while adequate, are a substantial distance behind their bigger brothers, the iPhone 6 Plus and the iPhone 6 Plus.
Apple Smart Battery Case Review: Design
The Smart Battery Case features a 1877mAh battery that is stuffed in the back and this is what makes the case so special and also why it looks a little like Quasimodo, just without the ginger hair.
Constructed from a soft-touch silicon material the case is VERY grippy which means once it is in your hand it 'ain't goin' nowhere. Unfortunately, this also works when the iPhone is inside your pocket; the Smart Battery Case will cling to a pocket’s inner-lining with surprising strength, much like Apple’s other iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s cases.
Setup is SUPER simple. Just slide the iPhone in and, BOOM, it works — just like that. All the iPhone’s buttons and ports are present on the Smart Battery Case too, meaning you can use it just as you would without the case on.
Once the Smart Battery Case is connected to the iPhone you can view how much charge the case has left on the lockscreen or inside the battery widget. In addition, the Smart Battery Case’s battery will always be used first before switching to the core iPhone cell — you can’t switch between the two.
Unlike a lot of other battery cases on market, the Smart Battery Case does not feature any notification lights or way to tell how much juice is left in the tank — all of this takes place inside iOS. Guess Apple wanted to keep things nice and simple in this regard.
Apple Smart Battery Case Review: Performance
Apple says the 1877mAh cell inside its Smart Battery Case will give you an additional 18 hours of LTE Internet use (up from 10) and 25 hours of talk time (up from 14). I’ve had the case for about a week now and it works great — I literally don’t even think about running out of battery. And this is very unusual when using an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s.
So, yeah, if battery life is important to you and you don't fancy the iPhone 6s Plus then this is probably something you should be looking into. Nevertheless, it is VERY expensive and there are plenty of other cheaper options which, if you’re reading this with a view to actually investing in one, you should probably check out before dropping £79 of Apple’s Smart Battery Case.
