2016 year in review: Huawei throws down the gauntlet

2016 signified the rise of Chinese companies like Xiaomi, Lenovo, Huawei, OnePlus and Coolpad from mere pawns in the smartphone game to serious players capable of challenging the big boys like Samsung and Apple.

Dual-camera goodness
2016 was a great year for the Chinese telecom giant Huawei’s mobile division. The Huawei Mate 9 was both a critical and commercial hit and was followed up by the P9, which came with dual cameras made in collaboration with imaging legend Leica.

The Huawei P9 became a huge hit, selling over 9 million units globally as of November 2016.

The company also released the Honor 8 which offered the flagship P9’s dual camera experience at an affordable price. Alongside the Honor 8, Huawei also released the Honor 8 Smart for Rs 19,999 and the budget Holly 3 for Rs 9,999.

These smartphones helped the company retain the No. 3 phone brand globally in Q3 2016 behind only Samsung and Apple.

Huawei's meteoric rise
Huawei has been the dark horse in the smartphone race in 2016, not talked about much but silently desecrating the competition. What is even more impressive is that these numbers came despite Huawei not having a significant presence in one of the biggest mobile markets in the world, USA.

Huawei’s meteoric rise started with the the company’s decision to make the Nexus 6P, which helped Huawei gain global brand recognition.

In India however, the brand is struggling a bit and needs to follow the example of Lenovo and Xiaomi in releasing devices which offer stellar performance at affordable prices.
