Samsung beats Uber with Rs 78 lakh package at IIT placement fair

Latest Govt. Jobs 19:12:00 News Edit
MUMBAI: On Day One of placements at IITs, Microsoft picked five students from the Powai campus, four of whom will be based in the US. Uber International was the other big buyer at the premier engineering institutes with its massive annual compensation of $1.1 lakh or around Rs 75 lakh (base salary) at IIT-Madras.

But it was Samsung, which took the pre-placement offer (PPO) route and picked around 10 IITians, including five from IIT-Bombay and a couple from IIT-Delhi and IIT-Kanpur, that offered the largest compensation of $1.15 lakh (Rs 78 lakh) as base salary.

Much before the on-campus placements kicked off at Powai, the pool of computer science graduates had shrunk, with 20-25 students accepting various pre-placement offers of the 125 overall that had come in. By 10 pm on Day 1, 60 offers were made at IIT-B by companies that had come from across the world.
The offers were similar at the other IITs, but companies picked fewer students this time around. Top organizations hired an average of three to four candidates, down from the 8-9 average compared with the previous year.

At IIT-Bombay, 18 companies, including Google, Microsoft, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, Boston Consulting, Bain, WorldQuant, A T Kearney, P&G and ITC, spent the day hunting for talent. Millennium Hedge Fund, with its big money, picked two candidates.

In the second session that would go on until 2am, IIT-Bombay will have students vying for openings in 11 companies, including PwC, Diac, Schlumberger, Flow Traders, Opera Consulting, IBM, Xerox, Uber International, NEC Corp, Sysmex and Murata Manufacturing from Japan.

At IIT-Madras, 57 offers were made at the end of two sessions on Day One. Among these were three international offers from Microsoft, Oracle and Uber International made during the graveyard shift from midnight until 6 am on Thursday.
The morning in IIT-Madras saw participation from companies such as Samsung R&D Bangalore, Uber India, Microsoft India, Oracle India, Goldman Sachs, IBM Research, Texas Instruments, Boston Consulting Group, Dalberg Global Development Advisers, Nutanix Technologies, Auctus Advisors, Xerox Research Centre, VISA Inc and ITC Ltd.

Companies that made more than four offers at IIT-M included Microsoft, Samsung R&D, Goldman Sachs, Oracle, VISA and ITC. So far, 308 companies have registered for the initial phase of placement season. A total number of 1,327 students have registered for these opportunities out of which 206 are female scholars.
At IIT-Kharagpur, 63 offers were made by 25 companies, said sources. The institute follows a one-offer-one-student policy. Among the companies that were at Kharagpur, 30% were MNCs offering foreign postings to students. Some banks from South East Asia were present too.
Apart from the common large IT and consulting firms, IIT-Delhi also saw social media management platform Sprinklr, Parthenon, QuadEye and Tower Research pick students. Later in the day, quant trader Open Futures, Finmechanics, Kepler Cannon, IBM Research and Rocket Fuel also descended on the campus to pick IItians.

One student at IIT-Roorkee was offered a job at Microsoft. Placement head N P Padhy said, "We gave space in Slot One to a PSU and to a central government organization. We were surprised at how aggressive they were. One PSU was equivalent to five IT companies."
