eBay India Has Laid Off Around 100 People From Its Tech Team in Bengaluru

HIGHLIGHTS

  • eBay India confirmed major layoffs at its Bengaluru development center
  • The layoffs are part of a global reorganisation in eBay
  • Sources say around 100 people have been laid off
Reports have been coming in about large scale layoffs at eBay India, and a company spokesperson has confirmed the development to Gadgets 360.
"We are reducing our overall technology workforce in Bangalore and shifting work to other global centres around the world," an eBay spokesperson told Gadgets 360 via an emailed statement. "eBay’s Bangalore Centre will now focus on eBay India-dedicated product and development work."
The layoffs, which were first reported by Tech in Asia, are part of a global reorganisation of the tech and product teams, the company says.
"The development centre in Bengaluru has two teams, the analytics team and the product and tech team," the spokesperson added. "The reductions affected the product team, the analytics team is fully intact."
"With the reorganisation, some work was no longer being done here, so reductions had to take place," the spokesperson added. "That doesn't mean that we are closing the technology team in India, instead the remaining employees will focus on eBay India related development, and we will hire more people."
Though the company did not officially share details about the number of eBay India employees impacted, Gadgets 360 has learnt from its sources that 30 percent of the eBay India workforce has been laid-off. With eBay India said to have roughly 350 employees, around 100 people have likely been affected by this latest "reduction."
