Google’s popular Android operating system has been leading the pack for a while now when it comes to installs. Surprisingly it keeps building a bigger and bigger lead over other smart phone operating systems like Apple’s iOS as new data shows it’s being used on nearly 9 out of 10 smart phones in the world.
As of today the Android operating system has taken share of 87.5% of the worldwide smart phone market according to research by Strategy Analytics. This is likely due in part to the increased sales of Google powered devices in conjunction with the declining sales of iPhones. The numbers themselves are pretty staggering with over 328 million android devices being purchased in the last 3 months alone. Apple on the other hand only sold roughly 45 million iPhones during this same time period.
Again this may be in part due to the fact that Google allows companies to use their OS on their hardware where as Apple is known for keeping the entire OS & product development in house.
It will be very interesting to see how these numbers change over the next 6 months to a year. Additionally Google is also in a prime spot to capitalize on the popularity of it’s operating system with it’s new smartphone the Pixel. By bringing the hardware in house with their latest phone Google is going to be in a great spot to hopefully increase their net profits from their OS. As of now the various smartphone manufacturers are the ones making the most from the device sales. Now with Google’s new product in the mix they are likely going to get a piece of that pie as well.
With the well known Samsung issues currently headlining the news cycle this may be the perfect storm for Google to make a meaningful impact on the hardware side of the smart phone market.
