How Samsung, OnePlus, Motorola, Nokia rank on Android updates
Almost seven months – or 192 days to be precise – ago Google released its latest mobile OS, the Android Oreo to the public. Now that seems a fair amount of time for the OS to be adopted by smartphone brands. However, Oreo is still a rare sight on Android smartphones. In fact, last month it was reported that Oreo is available only on 0.7% of smartphones. ComputerWorld has come out with a report card to see how Android Oreo has fared on different brands.

The methodology for this report card is based on three attributes: length of time for upgrade to reach current flagship smartphones; length of time for upgrade to reach previous-gen smartphones; and overall communication with customers throughout the upgrade process. The brands which have been graded are Google, HTC, OnePlus, Motorola (Lenovo), LG, Samsung, Sony and Nokia.

As per ComputerWorld’s report card, Google fares the best and gets 94%. It took Google 9 days to reach current flagship devices (Pixel smartphones) and about 18 days on previous-gen devices (Nexus 6P and 5X). On communication attribute, Google was rated mediocre.

OnePlus was the next on the list with 65% score. OnePlus took 138 days to reach current flagship devices (OnePlus 5) and 91 days to reach previous-gen flagship devices (OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T). Bizarrely, OnePlus made Oreo available earlier on its previous gen-devices than current ones. The communication about Oreo from OnePlus was rated as poor.

HTC’s Oreo score was 49% as it took 99 days to reach current flagship devices (HTC U11+) whereas it hasn’t reached any of its previous-gen smartphones. HTC’s communication was also rated poor.

Lenovo, on the other hand, with its Motorola devices got 45%. Only one flagship (Moto Z2 Force) has Oreo and it took 124 days. Moto X4 is the only other device to run Android Ore. Like others, Motorola’s communication was rated poor by ComputerWorld.

As far as the Korean brands are concerned, LG hasn’t got Android Oreo on any of its smartphones and its communication has also been poor.

Samsung, according to ComputerWorld, hasn’t got any devices with Android Oreo. So it also gets zero% score. However, Android Oreo update has been resumed for Galaxy S8 smartphones. Though it was stopped for a short while for bug fixes but it has now started to roll out.

Nokia has Android Oreo on its current flagship Nokia 8 device whereas Sony XZ Xperia range of smartphones have also got Oreo.
