Micromax Evok Dual Note Review

Latest Govt. Jobs 23:39:00 Reviews Edit
Micromax Evok Dual Note review: Doesn't strike the right note
The latest trend in smartphones is the dual rear camera set up. While it was expected for the biggies to equip their flagship devices with dual rear cameras, the bug has bitten the budget and mid-range smartphones as well. Micromax has taken the dual rear cameras in the sub-Rs 10,000 category with its Evok Dual Note. The domestic smartphone company is offering the 3GB RAM variant of the device at Rs 9,999 whereas The 4GB RAM variant is priced at Rs 11,499.

We got our hands on the device for a few days and here's what we think of it:

Design and display

The Micromax Evok Dual Note comes in a metal unibody design with chamfered edges. The edges not only provide the smartphone a better grip, but also make it less susceptible to damage from drops. While the front has a 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass layer, the rear side has a matte finish which gives it a premium look and feel. The handset comes in two colour combination options -- Champagne and Prussian Blue. We got the latter one to review.
On the front, the Micromax Evok Dual Note has three capacitive (non-backlit) keys -- one home button key that also houses the fingerprint sensor, one for multi-tasking and going one page back. Above the display, there's an earpiece, 5MP selfie camera and proximity sensor.

The non-removable back panel has the vertically arranged and centrally placed dual rear camera setup of 13MP+5MP and LED flash placed in-between them. The bottom of the smartphone has the Micromax branding. Both rear cameras are protruding, so they may get scratched when the phone is laid on a flat surface.

Just like the Micromax Dual 5, the Evok Dual Note too comes with the USB-Type C port. It's placed at the bottom, along with stereo speakers. There's a volume rocker and power button on the right, while the left side has the SIM card tray.

Moving on to the display, the device has a 5.5-inch full HD screen with 1920 x 1080p resolution with a pixel density of 401ppi. The display is impressive and produces vivid colours with fair amount of accuracy. Even under harsh sunlight, there were no complaints with it and viewing angles are also decent.

The Evok Dual Note comes with a display called the Miravision which lets you adjust the picture quality according to your needs. It has a Picture mode that has options like Standard, Vivid and User Mode. With the User mode the contrast, saturation and picture brightness can be adjusted along with sharpness and colour temperature. It also has an eye-protection mode called the BluLight Defender.

While there is nothing exciting about the design of the Micromax Evok Note, it still is a well-built device. Its design is similar to a lot of other devices available in the same price bracket.

Performance and camera
Micromax Evok Dual is powered by an octa-core MediaTek MT6750T processor, paired with 4GB of RAM. It also has 32GB of internal storage and supports microSD cards of 64GB in size.

The Evok Dual Note runs Android 7.0 Nougat with Micromax's UI baked on top. The interface is clean and user-friendly. There is an app drawer which gives the home screen a clutter free look. The smartphone comes pre-loaded with certain apps such as Amazon, Facebook, Narendra Modi app, Uber and more. All these apps, however, can be uninstalled.

The handset has two notification shortcuts on the home screen. The basic one that we see in all Android handsets can be accessed from the sliding from the top, while Micromax's custom notification can be accessed by sliding from the bottom or long-pressing on the home screen. We are not sure why these two are available separately as a lot functions are present twice because of this on the home screen.

We ran Antutu and GeekBench 4 tests on our device. While the phone scored 83094 in Antutu Benchmarks, the single-core and multi-core scores on GeekBench 4 were 614 and 2625 respectively.

During our testing, the smartphone handled everything from multi-app switching to gaming without any hiccups. There were no heating issues either - a problem that a lot of recent devices suffer from. The Micromax Evok Note delivers smooth and lag free performance - be it gaming or multitasking, the device handles it well.

The call quality was good even in areas where signal was weak. During our testing, we found the network reception satisfactory. Calls were handled smoothly where network coverage was a bit of an issue. The audio quality from the speaker - which is placed at the bottom -- is good, but holding the smartphone in landscape orientation somewhat reduces the output.

The Micromax Evok Dual Note has a 3000mAh battery that lasted us about a day in regular use. This included playing games and browsing social media apps, with Wi-Fi turned on.

Micromax Evok Dual Note has a dual 13MP+5MP rear cameras and a 5MP front-facing shooter. One of the dual rear camera modules is an RGB one, while the other is monochrome. The Dual Mode in the camera offers the depth of field effect which barely respectable. The smartphone lets you adjust the focus and depth of the image after it has been captured and it was difficult for it to focus on the part we had selected before clicking the image.

But keeping that aside, the colours of the images turned out to be great. Even the front camera is quite impressive as it brought out true colours rather than make the images artificial due to Beautification feature found in a lot of front cameras these days.

Verdict

The Micromax Evok Dual Note manages to offer a strong built with a premium finish, lag-free performance and a decent camera experience. At Rs 11,999, it a definitely a good option for people who have a strict budget. There is also a cheaper variant of the device available at Rs 9,999 which offers 3GB RAM.

Having said that, the dual rear camera of the device is far from perfect and therefore, doesn't stand much chance in this respect with its other budget smartphones. If you are looking to buy a budget smartphone which will capture good bookeh effect images, with a couple of thousand extra bucks, you may go for smartphones such as Coolpad Coolplay 6 or the Xiaomi Mi A1.
