NEW DELHI: It has been quite some time since HyperX, a gaming subsidiary of Kingston has come up with a gaming keyboard. Not many have heard about the firm in India as the computer accessory market is dominated by the likes of Logitech and HP. When it comes to gaming, there are even fewer brands that have made it big. And HyperX is one of those.
So why are we talking about HyperX today? The gaming peripherals firm, among all its PC accessories, has come up with a couple of gaming keyboard - HyperX Alloy FPS and Alloy Elite. Out of the two, we have been using the latter since past few days. The Keyboard was recently launched in India at Rs 11,000.
So what's different with the HyperX Alloy Elite gaming keyboard? After using it extensively as our full-time keyboard for all our work, we can definitely say it gets the basics right. Here is our review of the Alloy Elite.
Design
The HyperX Alloy Elite is typical gaming keyboard in terms of looks. Sporting a stealthy appearance, the keyboard makes good use of spaces and has everything within reach without flexing any extra muscles. The accessory has red backlight but unfortunately that's the only colour you're going to get. Gamers are generally used to customisations but having Red as the only colour might bring some frowns.
Nonetheless, the keyboard still looks great. You can, however, play with the colour brightness settings. The Alloy Elite does have some tricks up its sleeve using which you can manage the brightness of the backlit keys, highlights only the WASD keys or set it up in the wave-style key light option. There are a total of six lighting effects
The accessory makes it easy to control some features as it has some inbuilt media buttons and volume wheel to control audio. There is a dedicated Quick access button to control the brightness and Game Mode.
In addition, the Alloy Elite gives you the liberty to connect your mouse or other accessory with a USB 2.0 port. You can even charge your smartphone. We particularly found the USB port useful given that the keyboard itself takes two USB cables to connect to the PC.
For the sake of customisation, you can change the look of the keyboard by replacing the regular keycaps with different titanium-colored textured ones.
Looks aside, HyperX Alloy Elite feels durable and won't take any damage even if it goes through certain level of rough usage. It's solid steel frame provides provides the required stability gamers want in a keyboard.
Adding to the durability is that the keyboard has a 1.8 meter braided wire, which splits into two with dual USB 2.0 ports.
Performance
If you are a gaming enthusiast and are already using a gaming keyboard then this won't be an eye-opener for you. The Alloy Elite's mechanical, anti-ghost keys are accurate to the point without any lags. We played a couple of racing games, in addition to using it as our daily driver for a week, and found it really accurate without any delays.
Like the HyperX Alloy FPS that we reviewed recently, the Alloy Elite too has a relatively high-polling rate of 1000Hz, making it better responsive than other keyboards out there. It also has 100% anti-ghosting keys, meaning you can carry out multiple key commands at once without fail. This is often a major requirements by gamers. The WASD keys are pretty much accurate in handling movements in game titles.
While pressing multiple keys it may also be possible that gamers can accidentally press the windows key in the middle of gameplay, hampering the overall experience. So in order to solve this issue, HyperX Alloy Elite has also made it possible to deactivate the Windows button for accidental triggering.
As far as the compatibility goes, the accessory is compatible with devices running Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8 and Windows 7.
Verdict
At Rs 11,000, the HyperX Alloy Elite brings several features that Alloy FPS and other slightly pocket-friendly gaming keyboards lack. You get one of the best and fastest response and really accurate keys, which every gamer wishes. Although it left us asking for more in terms of customisations, nonetheless, the device looks great with that Red and Black colour mix.
It is not heavy and can be carried around easily. You can even change the looks by changing the keycaps, something you don't find in every other keyboard. We would've given it as 'steal' deal if the Alloy Elite was priced under Rs 10,000. We are saying this because it can face a fierce competition with Corsair K70 Rapidfire mechanical keyboard, which has nearly the same set of specifications and features and is priced at Rs 8,000 from Amazon for now.
However, you will be sacrificing on the compact design as Corsair K70 has a larger footprint. If you want a compact gaming keyboard at Rs 8,000 with similar capabilities, you can go for the Alloy FPS.
