Latest Govt. Jobs 22:24:00 Reviews Edit
InFocus Turbo 5 Plus review: A sequel with minor upgrades
Bezel-less displays. Quad HD resolutions. Dual cameras. These features have now become a primary keyword associated to any new smartphone in the market. Some smartphones, like the iPhone 8 Plus and OnePlus 5 have added a second lens to allow users to zoom in on a subject that's further away. Others allow users to get a wider shot or capture images in monochrome.
Back in August, InFocus released the Turbo 5. A budget smartphone that, surprisingly, is its best device so far. We even added that this was their best 'comeback device'.
InFocus too has jumped on the 'dual-camera' wagon by introducing the Turbo 5 Plus. The new variant not only brings two cameras, but also introduces the sequel to the Turbo 5 in a new 'package'. So, did the new device impress us like the last device? Read our review to find out.

Design

The InFocus Turbo 5 Plus is no different from the 'non-Plus' variant when it comes to design. You get the same easy-to-hold-in-the-palm form factor, but in a metal encasing and plastic non-removable back. The battery is no longer removable, the fingerprint reader is shifted from the back to the front, and the phone feels a tad bit heavier than the other variant.

The smartphone comes with 2.5D glass on the front. On the sides are the lock/unlock button and volume rockers which have a solid build quality. They are also easy to reach during one-handed usage. The headphone jack and front-facing camera are located at the top while the micro USB port and speakers are placed at the bottom. The capacitive home key has a built-in fingerprint reader is very sensitive, even at the slightest contact.
The highlight of the smartphone, obviously, is the dual camera setup at the rear. The rim enclosing the two cameras causes the smartphone to wobble when placed on a flat surface, but this does not hinder users to interact with the smartphone while it's on a table.

Performance

The InFocus Turbo 5 Plus functions smoothly without any lags. The MediaTek MT6750 64-bit octa-core chipset clocked at 1.5GHz handles animations very well. Coupled with 3GB of RAM, multitasking was between apps and webpages was seamless.
The surprises did not stop there. Even while playing Need For Speed: No Limits, we did not notice any lags in performance. After 10 minutes of high adrenaline races, we observed that there was only a minimal heating issue slightly below the camera modules. On Geekbench, the smartphone scored 608 on single-core and 2530 on multi-core tests. The Antutu scores were 39936.
InFocus Turbo 5 Plus comes with a full HD 5.5-inch display sporting a 1280x720 pixel resolution. The IPS display panel performs great both outdoors in bright sunlight and also at the lowest brightness settings in darker conditions indoors. Sensitivity of the screen is amazing and is responsive even near the edges.
The fingerprint reader-cum-home button unlocks the phone quickly. But, if the smartphone is placed in your pockets with the scanner facing downwards, you will feel the phone vibrating more often. That's because the fingerprint reader just detects any contact made with its surface. We wonder why they shifted the fingerprint scanner from back where it is ideally more convenient for users to reach.

The smartphone runs on Android 7.0 Nougat with its custom Smile UX. From the time of unboxing the device till the time of writing this review, the InFocus has received two software updates. Both aiming at fixing bugs and improving performance of the UI. The theme and icon packs have vibrant colours. With the absence of an app drawer, you will need to manage all your apps into folders.

The cameras on the InFocus Turbo 5 Plus are a mixed bag. Taking pictures using Auto mode in bright outdoor conditions results in crisp images. The dual camera setup is its Achilles heel. The depth effect failed to impress us. Users can tap to focus on a particular subject, adjust the aperture settings and watch the software blur a circular section of the image. We do hope that the company can improve the performance with future software updates.

When it comes to charging the device, the InFocus Turbo 5 Plus gets fully replenished within 90 minutes.
Audio performance is amazing from the headphone jack. Front speakers are loud and you can enjoy watching movies and listening to music with the volume set high.
Verdict
The InFocus Turbo 5 Plus is a definite buy for anyone who's looking for their first budget smartphone, priced at Rs 8,999. It surprisingly improves upon the Turbo 5 without breaking your wallet. The Turbo 5 Plus could have taken on Xiaomi's Mi A1, had the dual camera performance been more than just a circular cosmetic filter. The InFocus Turbo 5 checks the boxes for software, day-to-day performance and battery life.
