Samsung UD590 (2017) review

Latest Govt. Jobs 11:56:00 Reviews Edit
Samsung

VERDICT

A reasonably-priced 4K monitor with an attractive design, fast response time and decent image quality once you've calibrated it or fiddled with the settings.

PROS:

  • Attractive design
  • Easy to setup
  • Image quality (once calibrated)
  • Menu controls

CONS:

  • No adjustable height
  • TN panel
  • Requires calibration
The emergence of new technology is usually accompanied by high price points and a lack of choice, requiring deep pockets and the patience to put up with exciting, but often flawed first efforts.
Most 4K monitors are still very expensive, but efforts by manufacturers to bring down prices means that they are now able to put out models catering to different use cases, striking a balance between features and quality in a bid to bring the technology to wider adoption.
A case in point, Samsung's 28-inch UD590 makes compromises in just the right areas. Relatively affordably priced at £429 ($679, or AUS$782), it is being aimed at gamers, media consumers and productivity-conscious users thanks to its 3,840 x 2,160 pixel resolution, which is four times that of a regular 1080p monitor.
There is an ever-increasing number of competing models at this price point, which include Acer's XB280HK (£499) that features Nvidia' frame synchronising G-Sync technology, AOC's U286PQU (£399), and Asus' PB287Q (£450). Additionally, if you thinkthat 28 inches may be too big for you, Dell offers an impressive 24-inch 4K monitor in the UltraSharp UP2414Q .

Design and setup

It's easy to see the UD590 appealing to fans of minimal monitor design, with Samsung keeping things simple in just about every area - from design to setup and calibration. The black bezel that surrounds the panel is thin and unobtrusive, with the only decoration being a silver Samsung logo along the bottom.
The stand is made of a sturdy aluminium construction and is both light and durable. It also allows the UD590 to be set up quickly and easily as it's the only other part (other than the panel itself) that you'll find in the box. The stand connects to the monitor using two screws, meaning you'll need your own screwdriver to hand as one isn't supplied.
Front angle
Front angle
The monitor can be tilted forwards and backwards by around 15 degrees, allowing you to face it downwards slightly if you place it on books or another surface for elevation. Unfortunately you'll have no choice but to do so for extra height in the absence of an adjustable height stand. Neither can you rotate it left and right unless you physically pick it up and turn it around.

Features

You'll have no trouble accessing the UD90's ports because they're conveniently located at the centre of the monitor's rear. Embedded in a slightly recessed part, they're easily accessible and allow you to connect and remove cables with minimum effort. There you'll find two HDMI ports, a DisplayPort and a headphone output jack.
Rear
Rear
Such port placement, while convenient, means that it would be very difficult to wall mount the display - so it's just as well that Samsung hasn't given you the option thanks to the absence of VESA mount holes. If you're looking to pin your gaming battle station's display onto the nearest wall, the UD590 isn't a suitable choice.
Menu controls are operated using a five-way joystick found on the bottom-left hand corner on the display's rear panel. We've seen similar menu control methods employed on monitors such as LG's UM3495 to good effect, and it works well once again here, providing the dual benefit of ease of use while remaining tucked out of sight.
Pushing it up, down, left and right will take you to other menus, while depressing it is used to make selections. I find this a much preferable option to fiddly touch-sensitive controls that can fail to register presses on some monitors, but those who frequently switch inputs or change aspects such as brightness and volume will still prefer physical front-facing buttons.

Performance

The UD590 uses a TN panel, which means that while viewing angles are good, they're not great, and are noticably weaker than what you would usually find on more expensive IPS variants.
Out of the box, brightness as almost blinding, as if it had been pre-configured to compensate for slightly off colour saturation. While it incredibly bright, colour saturation and vibrancy was lacking, requiring a going over with our calibration tool.
TN has long had the reputation of producing poorer colour saturation and inferior viewing angles to IPS, but such displays have improved in recent years and the UD590 looks anything but cheap once properly calibrated.
Using our Spyder4 Elite calibrator, it was possible to not only correct the colour saturation and adjust contrast and brightness to appropriate levels. Post-calibration, colours appeared bolder and more accurate, with 4K test wallpapers showing deep blacks and vibrant colours.

Productivity and gaming

Gaming on a 4K monitor can be an absolute treat, but you will need what is still considered a monster rig to game at the resolution with anything approaching acceptable frame rates.
We fired up Skyrim on a full-specced MacBook Pro with Retina connected over HDMI. Although frame rates were choppier than a steamboat in a storm (and limited to 30hz due to the limitations of HDMIv1.4), the picture quality was nonetheless highly impressive, packing incredible amounts of detail and producing no noticable ghosting thanks to its 1ms response time. To play at full 60hz you'll need to use DisplayPort in addition to the hefty amounts of raw computing power.
Another "disadvantage" of 4K is that Windows 8.1 suffers from scaling issues and inconsistency, rendering fonts very hard to read in certain applications such as Google Chrome. The UD590 is no different, meaning you'll have to dedicate some time to adjusting the Magnifications setting in Windows to strike a balance between legibility, being able to read menus and text and having enough real-estate on the screen.
Once you've carried that out to satisfaction, you'll find that there's ample room for snapping documents side-by-side, watching movies in breathtaking detail and closing applications less frequently.

We liked

We liked the fact that the monitor totes a stylish, miniaml design, has fantastic colour reproduction after calibration and a stylish design that that stands out in any bedroom or office. Gamers will appreciate its super fast 1ms response time and easily located ports. Priced just right, it's also a monitor for those who favour ease of setup and simple-to-navitage menu controls.

We disliked

Being a TN panel, rather than IPS, viewing angels aren't quite as good as they could be. It's less of an issue due to the fact that you can't swivel around the monitor and can only tilt it by a fraction, but it's still noticable. The joystick-operated menu controls may not to be to everybody's liking for those that require changing inputs and other controls often.

Final verdict

For gamers and those requiring a stylish and hassle-free monitor for undertaking a number of everyday tasks - from gaming to consuming media, surfing the web and typing documents - the Samsung UD590 is a fine choice that's priced right. Professional image editors, on the other hand, will want to look for something with more solid colour accuracy.

re're many advantages to Apple's ecosystem. The synergy between the devices is unprecedented. Apple has "simplified" things so much that its products are considered to be easier to use. The products also come with a great ecosystem of accessories which makes owning them a fuss-free experience for most of the people. However, Apple's approach also adds some complexities. For example, one big problem for the iPhone users is management of their music collection. On the iPhone or iPad you can't "cut, copy and paste" files. Also, Apple owns the iTunes store and in order to avoid piracy it limits the user of an iPhone or iPad to a host PC or a Mac. So how does one transfer music from a laptop to an iPhone? For example you have 10 songs on your computer. You want them into your iPhone. It is an amazingly simple question, but the answer to it is a little complex. The iTunes method The iTunes method is what one must use to transfer music from a laptop, external hard-drive or pen drive to the iPhone. To do this, you need to follow these steps: 1- Download and install iTunes on your Windows PC. On a Mac, it will be pre-loaded. When you will open iTunes for the first time, it will scan your computer for all the music and media and add it to the iTunes library. If you have the music stored on an external drive, make sure that's also connected to the computer. It will also download all the music you've bought from Apple once you log-in to your iTunes account if you have used it before to purchase music. 2- Connect your iPhone to the computer using the USB cable. 3- Open iTunes. 4- Locate and click on your device on the left side bar. 5- Click on the 'Summary' tab and scroll down to the Options section. 6- Click the box next to "Manually manage music and videos." 7- Go to the 'Music' tab, check box next to sync music 8- Then click on either 'entire library' or 'selected playlists, artists and genre' which basically allows for manually selecting the songs that you want in the iPhone. 9- Click apply. Using iTunes, you can also transfer music wirelessly to the iPhone. The process is quite straight forward and you have to follow the following steps. 1- Connect the iPhone to iTunes using USB cable so that the sharing is enabled between the two devices. 2- Ensure iPhone and your laptop which is running iTunes is on the same Wi-Fi network. 3- Open iTunes 4- Once iPhone is connected iTunes, in the summary tab check on the ''Sync with this iPhone over Wi-Fi' tab. 5- Press "Apply" 6- The next time you open iTunes, you will be able to sync music wirelessly --- no USB cable required -- as long as both the laptop and iPhone are on the same Wi-Fi network. In case you store music in a pen drive or an external hard disk, here is what you will need to do: 1- Select the "iTunes preferences" menu. On Windows you have to go to the tiny button on the top right corner. On OS X, you have to go to the iTunes icon on the top right. 2- Inside preferences you have to jump straight to the last tab (8th) called "Advanced". 3- In the advanced tab, the first thing you will see 'iTunes media folder location'. By default, its path will read something like 'C:\\Users\Sahil\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media'. This is the folder you need to copy if you're backing up your music. 4- In the case you're trying to add music from an external drive you have to change the path. So if you're music is on 'D' drive inside a folder called music all you need to is change the path to D:\\Music and you're good to go. Also Read: How to 101: Transfer photos (including screenshots) from Android phone to laptop Copy music using cloud storage What if you have saved your music on cloud storage platforms like DropBox, OneDrive, or even Apple's iCloud? In most cases you will be able to stream the music directly from the dedicated app of the service. In the case of iCloud, the music finds its way into the Music app on the iPhone by turning on a setting on the phone. So here's what you must do: For iCloud 1- Enter the settings menu on the iPhone 2- Go to the iTunes and App Store settings and click the automatic downloads for the music. This will download all the music you have downloaded from the iTunes store on your iPhone. This works even if you made a purchase from a different device, using the same iTunes account. 3- Inside the setting menu, scroll down for the 'music' sub-menu and turn on iCloud Music Library which will either seek to merge your iCloud music with the one on your phone or completely replace the music on your phone with the one on iCloud. Opt for the option that is convenient to you. For DropBox and OneDrive 1- Download the respective apps from the App Store 2- Supply your relevant account ID and password to the app 3- Click on the file to play the song. The app will stream it. 4- On OneDrive, on the bottom right corner, click on the contexual menu and click on open with another app option. This will download the file on the phone so that you can play the song using the standard Music app or third party apps like JukeBox. 5- If you have a lot of music on DropBox and you want to download the music on to the iPhone, then download a free app called JukeBox. Once you open the app, it will ask for your DropBox account details and scan and download all the files on the phone so that you can play them. Third-party solutions The way iOS is architected there is no file system that's accessible to the user. So if you're looking for the traditional drag and drop method, you can't do it, unless you download a third party app. There are apps for both OSX and Windows. For Windows there is SharePod which can be bought for $20, while for OS X, there are solutions like iExplorer which costs $39 and Senuti which costs $19. Basically, when an iPhone, iPod or iPad are connected to a PC or Mac which have either of these apps open, users can see the file system and drag and drop files. SharePod 1- First connect your iPhone to the PC. 2- Then open SharePod, and it will start scanning for an Apple iOS device. 3- Then choose manually the files that you want to copy and click on the 'Copy to Computer' button. iExplorer 1- Open iExporer on the Mac. 2- Connect your iPhone or iPad with the Mac. 3- If iTunes prompts you to sync with your computer, select no or cancel. 4- Select individual tracks using the command button on the Mac. 5- Drag and drop the files in the folder of your choice. It is worth noting that we have not tested either iExplorer or SharePod, but these apps are believed to be very good at extracting data directly from an iPhone by opening up its file system.
