Reliance Jio and Google reportedly working on lower priced 4G phone, clever television software

Reliance Jio has taken the Indian telecom industry by storm. With the promise of offering the cheapest tariffs always, the company is headed for a commercial launch in April. As if that is not enough, the company is now reported to be working with Google to launch an affordable 4G smartphone

The first smartphone from the partnership will likely be launched by the end of the year. Both Google and Reliance Jio want to tap the massive customer base in India. With the low tariffs and pan-India network coverage from Reliance Jio, the other piece of the puzzle is an affordable 4G smartphone to go with it. This partnership between Reliance Jio and Google hopes to bring that piece and complete the puzzle.

While Reliance Jio will not only benefit from Google branding, the two companies will also be working on integrating Reliance Jio’s suite of apps into Android. This is expected to improve the performance of these apps significantly. Given the fact that these apps are a significant part of Reliance Jio’s digital offerings, their performance is critical for the company.

Apart from the affordable smartphone, Google and Reliance Jio are also being reported to be working together on software for smart TV services. Various reports have been suggesting that Reliance Jio will launch its TV services later this year.

Prior to this, Reliance had launched LYF branded 4G smartphones and portable routers. For this, the company had partnered with various Chinese companies like ZTE, Foxconn and others. Most recently, there have been reports that Reliance has partnered with Lava and Chinese ODMs (Original device manufacturers) to launch feature phones with VoLTE support.
