New LG G6 with 5.7-inch display and Snapdragon 821 now official 2017

As expected, LG has officially taken the wraps off its 2017 flagship, the G6. The smartphone comes with an all new design that is sure to impress fans. The internal hardware, on the other hand, is not really impressive, especially since we expected early 2017 flagships to be equipped with the Snapdragon 835 SoC. But as we have speculated before, it's possible that OEMs didn't want to jump into a new chipset after the Snapdragon 810 debacle a couple of years ago.

Speaking more about the smartphone, well, it comes with a 5.7-inch Quad HD “Full Vision” display (2880x1440) as well as a mammoth 12MP front facing camera which is sure to impress selfie enthusiasts. The rear dual camera consists of two 16MP sensors, so camera performance has surely been a focus for LG with this handset. The phone is IP67 certified water and dust resistant as well, which tells us that the company is finally catching on with the competition.

Further, the device comes with 6GB of RAM and 64/128GB of dedicated storage. We expect this to be a standard with upcoming flagships since companies are keen on transitioning to higher memory capacities. Android 7.0 Nougat is running by default here, which is no surprise. Expectedly, there's a fingerprint scanner on the back, which has become a common feature on modern day smartphones.

The speakers are located on both sides of the USB Type-C port. This tells us that there won't be any audio distortion even if the phone is kept on a flat surface. However, we would have loved to see front facing stereo speakers given how impressive they sound on devices. But it seems like LG wanted to cut down on bezel space in order to make the device easier to operate with one hand. This is something that the company is going to heavily market with its Full Vision display and perfect aspect ratio. Built in software magic will convert any video to its aspect ratio automatically.

It's important to note that LG has finally moved away from the modular phone concept given that it failed to impress with the G5. This perhaps allowed the company to focus on other key aspects of the phone, especially with regards to design.

The handset will be available in all the key markets starting March and April. The company hasn’t talked about the Indian release, but we expect it to arrive in the country soon. Pricing details are very scarce at the moment.
