critical’s upcoming bezel-less smartphone showed to be walking Android

A few days ago, Andy Rubin shared a teaser image on Twitter for a new smartphone by Essential. Although not much was known about the device apart from the fact that it will be bezel-less, there was still some ambiguity on the operating system that it will run. But those doubts have been cleared today by Alphabet’s Eric Schmidt, confirming via Twitter that this handset is running Android

Schmidt failed to divulge more information as he merely quoted Rubin’s previous tweet in which he teased the handset. Bezel-less smartphones are quickly becoming a trend now. We saw Xiaomi up the ante with the Mi MIX while Samsung had something of its own to show in the form of the Galaxy S8 and the S8+. So it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have something like this come out of a new brand to take the markets by storm.

Since the handset has only been teased as of now, we don’t know if it will reach the shelves anytime soon. Perhaps Essential wants to feel the market and gauge the reactions before deciding on a date. It seems like the smartphone has already finished development, given that the device is being shown off on social media.

Although the handset is supposed to be bezel-less, we haven’t had a very good glimpse of it yet. The teaser barely reveals one side of the device, but we can hope that more will be revealed in the coming days.

Rubin was the mind responsible for Android and is believed to be the father of the Android operating system. Having left Google in 2014, Rubin has been involved with a handful of tech companies. He is also a partner in Redpoint Ventures, which is an investment firm focused on startups.
