The telecom regulator has said it would continue to monitor the issue of “points of interconnect” (PoIs) as the quality of telecom services in the country was essentially a consumer issue.The statement came a day after Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio infocomm levelled charges against each other on the matter.
“We have been deliberating on this issue...It is not an issue of (operator) A versus B. It is an issue of consumers,” Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) Chairman RS Sharma said on the sidelines of an industry conference.
On Tuesday, Airtel had alleged the call failure on Jio’s network was owing to its own glitches rather than the new entrant’s claims of inadequate PoIs being released to it by the market leader. Mukesh Ambani-promoted Jio rejected the market leader’s claims, calling them “malicious and misleading” and denied any problems with its network.
Speaking about the ongoing case at the telecom tribunal wherein Airtel and Idea have alleged that Trai was a mute spectator and allowed Jio to flout the reguloator’s telecom tariff order, Sharma said, “It is a judicial process, and every entity in this country has the right to it (the process).”
Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular sought an order from the tribunal to ask Trai to direct Jio to stop providing free voice and data services.
Sharma noted that each month, hundreds of plans are filed with Trai. “As you know, the tariffs are under forbearance. In this particular plan (by Jio), the other incumbent operators had objected, so we have decided the issue between the entity that filed the plan and the entity who had objected to it. That decision is taken, and that decision has been appealed against. We do not have to represent ourselves. We will just file the records,” he said.
Trai, as a regulator, has decided on the dispute between the two parties.
“Our decision has been appealed against. We don't have to go and justify our decision, the records will speak,” he said.
