After the mutual agreement between the top officials of government and Apple , the Cupertino-based company will start its iPhone production in Bengaluru. PM Narendra Modi’s official app has confirmed that “Apple iPhone production in Bengaluru to commence soon”.
Although, the notification mentioned on the app states the ‘International Business Times’ as the source of the news.
Last week, Karnataka government had issued a statement welcoming Apple's proposal to begin its initial manufacturing operations in Bengaluru, which hinted that it is moving forward with its plan to assemble iPhones in India.
“Apple's intentions to manufacture in Bengaluru will foster a cutting-edge technology ecosystem and supply chain development in the state, which is critical for India to compete globally,” the state government had said in the statement.
Minister IT & BT, Govt of Karnataka, Priyank Kharge, had earlier told Reuters that he believes Apple will "tentatively begin manufacturing iPhones in the state by the end of April, or beginning of May." However, as of now, there is no formal agreement or memorandum of understanding done or signed by the state or the Union government with Apple.
The buzz about Apple setting up the assembly plant in India started in May 2016 during CEO Tim Cook's first-ever India visit. PM Modi is said to have then asked Apple CEO to look at the possibility of making its devices in India.
