The OMEN series of products had earlier already been launched in parts of US and China among other places. Rajiv Srivastava, managing director, HP India says that the OMEN series is going to cater to the gaming market for millennials. “We had a gap in our offerings towards millennials gaming needs. This series caters to entry level enthusiasts and high end gamers.”
The OMEN series will include 5 notebooks and 1 desktop model. The prices of the cheapest model stands as Rs.79, 990while the top end model will sell at Rs. 1,69,990.
The laptops will come at 17.3” and 15.6” screen size. They are powered by the latest generation NVIDIA 1070 GeForce GTX graphic card & 7th gen Intel quad-core i7. According to Srivastava, this series will help HP enter the VR and AR gaming space. “We have partnered with HTC Vibe globally and the powerful system configuration will let users play VR games and manage apps without any lag.”
While HP is targeting millennials with its Omen series, research and advisory group, Greyhound Knowledge Group’s founder, Sanchit Vir Gogia says that gaming laptops is no more a booming segment. “These laptops will not attract the hard core gamers who are tech savvy and mostly build their own gaming machines while millennials are multipurpose and use either console or mobile gaming.”
But he was quick to point out that these laptops might be successful with amateur level gamers who would spend around Rs 80,000 to buy such devices. But Srivastava contradicts that idea by saying that when gamers need higher power and performance, PC gaming is the only way to go. “In countries like Korea, Taiwan, China and Japan, games are being launched on Omen type of devices. Even when we launched in China and US exclusively on the site, we had around 10,000 bookings in an hour for the same category of product.”
Overall, HP’s market share stood at 20.4 in 3Q 2016 according to analyst firm Gartner owning to projects from the government, banking and the manufacturing sector. “India is an under penetrated market and we have a full portfolio of products to cater to each and every segment.”
