Epson WorkForce WF-100 review: Print on the go

What could be better than being able to carry around your office if you're on the move quite often. You already have a powerful laptop, along with a capable smartphone. All that's needed is a compact printer that can be used to print all your important documents whenever and wherever you need them. And Epson's new WorkForce WF-100 appears to be designed to do just that.

Having a price of Rs 20,999, the Epson WF-100 provides hassle-free wireless printing functionality and is lightweight as well. But is it really worth the price?
We spent some time with the printer and here's the rest of our review.

Design

Measuring about 13cmx38.4cmx25.9cm and weighing around 1.6kg, the Epson WF-100 is definitely quite compact. It has a textured plastic body which looks good, but is a bit prone to physical damage.

The USB and AC power ports are located on the left, while all the control buttons ( Power On/Off, Scroll keys and Back) and a 1.4-inch LCD display are located under a foldable lid. The lid acts both as a protective cover and the paper feed tray. There's a maintenance slot at the bottom. Other than that, an opening is located below the buttons and the screen, which can be used to access/replace the ink cartridges.

Performance

Epson WF-100 uses Pigment ink which is claimed to be fade and water resistant. It has a maximum print resolution of 5760x1440 optimized dpi. The paper sizes/types it supports printing include - 3.5" x 5", 4" x 6", 5" x 7", 8" x 10", 8.5" x 11", A4, A6, half-letter and executive. The print speeds vary according to the power source - AC or battery.
During our testing, we printed Black and White text, as well as high-resolution colour content on an A4 size paper. The WF-100 printed 3 B&W sheets in a minute and took about 48.49 seconds to print one coloured high-resolution A4-sized sheet. If the output print quality is tweaked, the Pages Per Minute (PPM) rate changes accordingly.

Over the course of our testing, we found the overall print quality of the Epson WF-100 to be decent. Coloured images printed on A4-size paper look quite sharp and bright. The printer is quiet in operation as well.
The built-in battery lasts around 2 hours with moderate usage and takes around 3 hours to get fully charged.

Epson WF-100 has built-in wireless connectivity and Wi-Fi Direct, that allows direct printing from smartphones, tablets or laptops. Apps like Epson Connect 4, Epson Email Print, Epson iPrint Mobile and Epson Remote Print provide effortless wireless printing functionality. All you have to do is connect the printer to the same wireless network as your smartphone and it's ready to go. Connectivity options include Hi-Speed USB, Wireless (802.11 b/g/n) and Wi-Fi Direct.

Verdict

The Epson WF-100 is a pretty good compact printer. The built-in rechargeable battery and wireless connectivity make it even better.

But even at a considerably high price of Rs 20,999, it only offers print functionality. We think that it should've included scanning and copying features as well.

If you just need a portable printer for efficient all-purpose printing, the Epson WF-100 is definitely worth considering. But if you can ignore portability and want to go for something that's more like an all-in-one, we'd suggest HP's DeskJet Advantage 3775. Although it doesn't have a rechargeable battery, but it's quite value-for-money at a price tag of Rs 7,176.
