Acer Spin 7 review: It has the looks

Latest Govt. Jobs 22:59:00 Reviews Edit

*Good design
*Decent performance
*Impressive display

Acer is known for making some really good laptops that deliver exceptional performance at affordable prices. The company recently expanded its India line-up with the launch of the Spin 7 2-in-1 convertible. The 2-in-1 laptop comes with an aluminium body and is claimed to be the thinnest hybrid in the world. Bearing a price tag of Rs 1,09,900, the Spin 7 is pitted against the likes of HP Spectre.

If you are a Windows user, who wants to get a stylish looking 2-in-1 PC, the Spin 7 might just be the one. To help you decide whether it's indeed worth the money or not, here's our full review.

Design and display

Acer Spin 7 has a matte-finished Black aluminium body with curved edges that impart it a premium look and feel. The lid has the Acer logo placed in the centre and is joined to the lower half by Silver hinges. It features a 14-inch Full HD display with really small bezels on the sides, an island-style keyboard and an extra large-size touchpad.

Apart from being sleek, the Spin 7 is lightweight and compact. It comes with 360-degree hinges which enable usage in four distinct modes - Laptop, Tablet, Display (by placing the keyboard face down) and Tent (the 'V' shape).

It consists of two USB Type-C ports on the right which support both charging and data transfers. Along with the USB ports, there is also a 3.5mm headphone jack placed on the same side. The left side has the power button and the volume rocker. The laptop also comes with two dongles for adding USB 3.0 and HDMI functionalities.
The Acer Spin 7 features a 14-inch Full HD display of 1920x1080 pixels resolution, secured further with a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass. During our testing, we found the display to be quite sharp and having accurate colour reproduction. Whether it's watching movies, playing games or browsing the internet, the Spin 7's display doesn't disappoint.

Viewing angles are fine and visibility under bright sunlight is great too. The display is non-reflective and touch screen experience is smooth when the device is used in tablet mode.

Keyboard and touchpad

Keyboard is one of the key points of Acer Spin 7. The island-style keyboard is comfortable to use and keys have good travel distance. Keys are responsive enough and make typing experience a true delight. However, the keyboard isn't backlit, which could be an issue for some users. Just below the keyboard lies a buttonless trackpad that's quite large in size.

The trackpad features Microsoft Precision software, which makes it responsive to swipes, taps and other gestures. During our time with it, we found the touchpad to be smooth to use. There's no visible lag and accidental moving of cursor due to the palms of our hands touching the trackpad.

Performance

Acer Spin 7 is powered by a 1.3-GHz Intel Core i7 CPU paired with 8GB of RAM. There's also 256GB of internal storage, expandable via microSD cards.

During the course of our day to day testing, the convertible performed very well with regular programs. It took around 33 seconds to transfer approximately 4.97GB of mixed media files to the hybrid. Along with this, the 2-in-1 performs multitasking quite well.

We opened several Google Chrome tabs, randomly switching between them with one of the tabs playing live-streaming video, and the Spin 7 didn't disappoint.
Coming to the software, the Acer Spin 7 comes pre-installed with Windows 10 but has its fair share of bloatware/useful apps too.

The Acer Portal app enables organization of created files using abFiles and abPhoto. There is also a Recovery Management feature, which can come in handy for creating backups and restoring data. Also, Quick Access allows easy access to features like Bluelight shield and Adaptive brightness. The bloatware includes mainstays like Twitter, Flipboard, Netflix, Amazon and Kindle, as well as Candy Crush Soda Saga, Music Maker Jam, Firefox and WildTangent Games.

In terms of audio quality, the Spin 7 really surprised us. Despite the thin size and build quality, the convertible offers a crisp and loud audio experience. It also comes pre-loaded with the Dolby Audio app, which further enables users to have a better audio experience while listening to music. You can further maximize the sound experience by attaching speakers to it using the audio jack.

Coming to the camera, the Spin 7 comes with a webcam capable of recording 720p video. We found the camera to be just about average, but good enough for Skype calls. Given the high price, we would have liked it to be a little better.

Now let's talk about battery life. During our usage, we found the battery backup of the Acer Spin 7 to be fairly average. On a full charge, it lasts around 6 hours. This isn't bad, but make sure you carry the charger with you while taking it on long trips.

Verdict

All in all, the Acer Spin 7 a fairly good 2-in-1 that works well both as a laptop and a tablet. At a price of Rs 1,09,900, we think it's a pretty good deal. But just in case you're looking for alternatives in a similar price range, you can go for Acer's own Swift 7 or the HP Spectre.
