Over the past few weeks, the rumor mill has been abuzz about Reliance Jio gearing up to commercially rollout its 4G LTE services in early April. The company has already shipped the Reliance Jio 4G SIM cards across Reliance Digital stores; however, it’s currently only available for purchase to Reliance employees. When BGR India reached out to a nearby Reliance Digital store, we were told that they are waiting for the final nod to start selling them.
However, is a caveat in here. As reported earlier, the Reliance Jio won’t be selling standalone 4G SIM cards initially. Customers will need to purchase VoLTE enabled LYF smartphones to get the Reliance Jio 4G connection.
Last week, we came across leaked Reliance Jio 4G plans, but as in case with rumors, there had been some misunderstanding. For the soft launch, Reliance Jio had offered 4G SIM cards to its employees for Rs 200, with 75 GB 4G mobile data and 4500 minutes. However, it was only for network testing purpose, RTN Asia reports.
Along with LYF-branded smartphones, Jio is also expected to offer Mi-Fi dongles. Based on reports, 40GB data plans could set you back anywhere between Rs 700 and Rs 800 with validity for three months. The company is also expected to offer data plans up to 200GB.
In the run up to the commercial launch, Reliance Digital has also launched 4G-enabled smartphones under its LYF brand with support for VoLTE and VoWiFi. Jio, on the other hand, has started rolling digital services with apps for cloud storage, music and video streaming. The company has also been offering free public Wi-Fi hotspots across the country at numerous ICC World Cup T20 stadiums.
