NEW DELHI: As smartphones get beastly powerful with each passing year, they are not only cannibalising the tablet market but also the PC market globally. The latest report coming from IDC makes this claim even more concrete. According to the report, shipments of traditional PCs (desktop, notebooks and workstations) and tablets (slate and detachable) – declined 2.7% year over year in 2017.
Last year, the desktop + detachable tablets & data centre category saw around 97.8 million shipments, while the ‘Slate Tablet’ segment was at 141.8 million shipments. The category that experienced the least shipments was the ‘Detachable Tablet’ market, while the ‘Notebook + Mobile Workstation’ category witnessed the most shipment numbers at 161.6 million.
Talking about bigger devices, the ‘Traditional PC’ segment was at 259.4 million units, while the Traditional PC + Detachable were at 281.3 million unit shipment in 2017. Slate + Detachable tablet segment together witnessed 163.8 million unit shipments.
However, no matter how high these numbers seem, the report confirms that traditional PCs will see a decline from 259.4 million in 2017 to 248.3 million in 2022. “However, when adding in detachable tablets such as the Microsoft Surface Pro, modest signs of growth are expected with a five-year CAGR of 0.1%,” adds the IDC report.
Also mentioned is that in short term, which is in 2018, the market may see a year-over-year decline of 3.2%. This is said to take place as consumer demand for slate tablets and legacy PC form factors remain weak.
Among everything else, Chromebooks are said to be in a ‘bright spot’.
“As the broader PCD market continues to evolve, challenges remain but there are plenty of positive signs, too," said Tom Mainelli, program vice president with IDC's Devices and AR/VR programs."New form factors such as convertibles and detachables continue to show long-term growth opportunities in both consumer and commercial markets. Chromebooks remain a bright spot with an increasing number of consumers embracing the platform. And the gaming category continues to grow, driving both positive volumes and ASP trends."
