iVoomi i1 Review

Latest Govt. Jobs 14:03:00 Reviews Edit
iVoomi i1 review: Basically, basic
There have been multiple forecasts that how in 2018, the bezel-less design won't be just a premium handset feature. The design element is expected to make its way to cheaper handsets as well. But who would've thought that we will have an entry-level handset as soon as the first month of the year to boast of this feature.

Priced at Rs 5,999, the iVoomi i1 is exactly this handset from the Chinese smartphone maker that also has a dual rear camera setup -- another feature that is slowly making its way to cheaper handsets. The company had also launched the i1s handset that differs just in terms of RAM and storage and otherwise the same phone as the i1.

We used the iVoomi i1 for a few days to check whether this smartphone has what it takes to lead on the kind of revolution the entry-level smartphone has been waiting for and here is our review.

Design and display
The iVoomi i1 comes with an 18:9 aspect ratio display which Samsung calls the Full View display. iVoomi terms it as the Absolute View display. Being of this aspect ratio, the phone is definitely taller and thinner but when it comes to bezels, it has quite noticeable bezels on both sides and can't technically be called bezel-less. The bezels on the top and bottom are comparatively thicker. At 165g and 9.5mm thickness, the iVoomi i1 feels a bit chunky.

The front is mainly dominated by the 5.45-inch display and has on-screen keys. The top edge houses a notification LED, an earpiece and the usual array of sensors. On the rear, the smartphone has a plastic removable back. Removing the back, one can see the battery and two sim-card slots and one microSD card slot. The placement of the dual rear camera along with dual LED flash is in the centre right above the finger print sensor and iVoomi branding.
The right edge houses the volume controller and the power button. The top houses the 3.5mm jack and the USB while the bottom edge houses the mono speaker.

As for the display, the device has a full HD display with 1280x640 pixel resolution. Given that it is an entry-level smartphone one cannot expect much from the display. Both viewing angles and colour reproduction were satisfactory at best. The display setting allows user to select font size and also adjust the picture quality according to your needs using Miravision technology.

Overall, we can say that there is nothing remarkable about either the design or the display of the iVoomi i1, but it does justice to the amount you're paying for it.

Performance and camera

The iVoomi i1 is powered by a 1.3GHz quad-core Mediatek Cortex-A53 processor coupled with 2GB of RAM. It also has 16GB of internal storage, of which 5.97GB is available to users and supports microSD cards of 128GB.

The handset runs Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box with a few customizations such as colourful icons and a floating dock called Quick Touch. This is similar to what we have seen in a few other handsets and basically has shortcuts to apps such as Dialler, Camera, Alarm, calculator and more. This is completely customizable and allows users to select any app they want. Personally, for us we didn't use this much but for those who use it, may find is extremely dependable.

Due to minor customisations, the UI of the iVoomi i1 is pretty close to stock Android and is therefore clean and user-friendly. There is an app drawer which gives the home screen a clutter free look. It supports Gesture Controls as well. The smartphone comes pre-loaded with certain apps such UC Browser, Xender and Flipkart. However, these can be uninstalled so users can save on the space. There is also an iVoomi Care Centre app that will let you track the nearest service centre once you input your location. It also includes the helpline number and warranty information of the device. We found this feature to be pretty neat as it saves users the hassle of Googling out this information at the time of need.

We ran Antutu and GeekBench 4 tests on our device. While the phone scored 63582 in Antutu Benchmarks, the single-core and multi-core scores on GeekBench 4 were 870 and 4279 respectively.

During our testing, the smartphone suffered a few hiccups. There was a visible lag in basic activities such as multitasking, switching between apps, internet browsing and so on. We also faced an issue trying to connect the handset to Wi-Fi as the smartphone suddenly stopped detecting the Wi-Fi in the vicinity even though we had other devices connected to the same Wi-Fi at the same time. The calls, however, were handled smoothly. The audio quality from the speaker -- which is placed at the bottom -- is also satisfactory but holding the smartphone in landscape orientation somewhat reduces the output.
The iVoomi i1 is backed by a 3000mAh battery and lasted us for less than a day's use.

Moving on to the cameras, the handset boasts of a 13MP primary camera and 2MP secondary sensor on the rear. The camera app is just as basic as the rest of the performance of the device. It offers simple modes such as Panorama and Bokeh. Under the camera settings, hide the auto scene detection, anti-shake and face detection toggles. While trying to capture images, we saw a visible lag in trying to focus on the object. Low-light shots were quite grainy and lacked detail. The day light shots were still better. The Bokeh effect couldn't produce the effect when the object in the foreground was big. The selfie camera can capture images of acceptable standard, but we still feel that the competition handsets such as Xiaomi Redmi 5A captured better shots.

Verdict

With a price tag of Rs 5,999, the iVoomi i1 smartphone tried to capture a rather unchartered territory of the Indian smartphone market, but unfortunately couldn't do so. The display has an 18:9 ratio making it one of first handsets in this price segment to have this feature. However, barring the price point and an acceptable set of features, there is nothing more that this device offers which compels us to recommend it. If you are looking for a handset in this price range, we suggest you go for the Xiaomi Mi 5A as it has proved to be a better performer.
