NEW DELHI: No tech company can escape from leaks and vulnerabilities completely and Apple is just one of them. The Tim Cook-led firm's iOS team may have been super active since past couple of days as someone posted an iOS 9 source code on GitHub over the weekend. Several media reports did mention that it could give hackers a chance to dig in and find the vulnerabilities and as a result, make it easier to jailbreak iPhones.
However, hours after the source code leak, Apple gave a response that primarily confirmed:
-The leaked source code is legit.
-Users should stay updated on the latest iOS version.
-iOS 9 hardly has any share in the pie as majority are on iOS 11 and last year's iOS 10 for now.
Here's a statement Apple gave to Tim's Guide website.
"Old source code from three years ago appears to have been leaked, but by design the security of our products doesn't depend on the secrecy of our source code. There are many layers of hardware and software protections built into our products, and we always encourage customers to update to the newest software releases to benefit from the latest protections," the company spokesperson said.
Later it was mentioned that iOS 9 and other old versions, run on around 7% of all the iDevices in the world.
The source code that made its way on GitHub was labelled as 'iBoot', which in iOS make sure a trusted boot of the operating system, explains MotherBoard. Although the code suggested it is for iOS 9, Apple may be using some parts of it in iOS 11 as well. For those unaware, Apple never releases its OS source code to the public. It has been mentioned that bugs found in iBoot are the most important ones. If you report an iBoot bug to Apple through the bug bounty program, you can get as much as $200,000.
