Instagram rolled out its live feature back in 2016 – a clear attempt to take advantage of the growing popularity of apps like Snapchat and Periscope. At first, users could only view their friends’ live videos when they were streaming. But Instagram soon learned that not everyone wants to be attached to their phone day in and day out.
Ever since they started allowing users to post their live videos to their Instagram Story, interest in the new feature has grown dramatically. Now, more and more people are wondering how they can manage comments and privacy settings for these videos.
Here, we’ll talk a little bit about how to manage comment settings and remove unwanted comments.
WHO CARES ABOUT COMMENTS?
Why would you want to tailor comments in the first place? Isn’t the internet (and social media for that matter) about the free and open expression of ideas?
Your social media content is your corner of the web and you have the right to protect yourself from abusive language. Instagram allows you to hide abusive comments on your live videos and even rig the videos so no one can comment in the first place.
Of course, some people might find themselves on the other side of the issue. Maybe they posted a comment that they’d rather the world not see. No problem. Instagram allows people to permanently delete any comments they’ve made.
Instagram is about sharing cool content and having fun. It’s not about tearing each other down.
DISABLE COMMENTS ON YOUR LIVE VIDEO
Remember that you can’t delete other people’s comments on your live video. You can only hide them via the comment filter or prevent them from showing up in the first place by disabling comments. Disabling comments is the best way to ensure that comments you don’t want don’t show up. However, it also means you’ll be missing out on any funny or encouraging things your friends might want to say.
- Launch the Instagram app.
- Open the Instagram camera.
- Locate the string of features at the bottom and scroll all the way to the left.
- Tap Start Live Video.
- Tap the three dots on the right end of the comment box.
- Tap Turn Off Commenting.
You should now see “Comments Turned Off” written in the comment box. If you want to turn them back on, tap the three dots again and select Turn On Commenting.
CUSTOMIZE YOUR COMMENT FILTER
Let’s say you want to encourage comments but keep the nasty stuff at bay. Instagram allows you to hide comments containing certain abusive language. You can either use Instagram’s preset options for this or create a customized list of words. Any comments containing those words will be automatically hidden.
If most of your nasty comments come from a particular source, you can also opt to cut to the chase and block comments from a specific user.
- Launch the Instagram app.
- Tap on the Instagram profile icon on the bottom row of icons.
- Tap the settings icon near the top.
- Scroll down and tap Comments under Settings.
- Explore one of the three available options.

Block Comments From – Tap the arrow to the right and search for the user whose comments you don’t want to see.
Hide Offensive Comments – Toggle this on to allow Instagram to use their own standards for blocking offensive comments.
Enable Keyword Filters – Toggle this on to block comments containing specific words. Add your own words in the field provided an/or toggle on Use Default Keywords.

You may have noticed that Hide Offensive Comments was already toggled on. When Instagram first introduced this feature, they turned it on for all users.
DELETE COMMENTS MADE BY YOU
Now let’s detour and say that you posted something on your own video or someone else’s that you want to delete. It doesn’t have to have been offensive. Maybe it was just a bad joke that felt right in the moment but now makes you cringe. You can delete comments made by you (and only by you).
- Find the comment you made.
- Swipe left on it to reveal more options.
- Tap the trash can icon.
If you swipe left really far, you can cut out step 3 and automatically delete the comment.
Its a great pleasure reading your post. Its full of information I am looking for and I love to post a comment that "The content of your post is awesome" Great work.
